Fortifications are located throughout the Netherlands. They were built both in the 17th century and during the world wars, and one of the lines appeared even in the Cold War, in case of an attack by the USSR. The line of defenses in the western part of North Brabant, although not the largest in the country - consists of only four forts - is the oldest. It was built in 1627 and allowed, if necessary, to flood one or another part of the country in order to hinder the advance of enemy troops. However, since the 19th century, it has not been used for its intended purpose, gradually collapsing and overgrown with grass and bushes.

In 2010, the local authorities began rebuilding the fortification system in Brabant, and the construction of the Pompejus watchtower according to the project

RO&AD architecten became part of this venture. The wooden structure appeared within the Fort De Roovere, the work was carried out for about ten months and was completed at the end of 2017. I must say that the fortress and the new tower are both named after Pompeius de Rovere, a prominent politician and the first commander of this fortification, who also supervised its construction.

The watchtower is located right next to the canal and is tilted towards it. From the inside, the “safe” side, it is completely open, and the facade facing the moat is “reliably protected” by wood sheathing; view is possible only through narrow openings. The upper part of "Pompeyus" serves as an observation platform: from a height of 26 meters you can see the surroundings at a distance of 20 kilometers, including the entire defensive line. As conceived by the architects, the tower also "works" as an information center and as an open-air theater for 225 spectators.

The facade drawing was created in accordance with the Voronoi diagram. Glued timber (facade, stairs) and steel (supporting structure) were used as materials. All the components of the prefabricated building were made in the factory and then delivered to the site in convenient packaging - like the one in which furniture from IKEA is brought in. The construction process itself was carried out without drawings - the contractors had only a 3D model.

The achievements of RO&AD architecten bureau include not only the development of the architectural project, but also the "life support" that they donated to the building. They involved various residents and municipal organizations in the construction process: the construction was funded by donations, and the work was carried out by various kinds of interns and volunteers. The project turned out to be truly popular, and Pompeius is now guaranteed constant support: as the architects say, the cultural program is scheduled for several years ahead.
