Moving along the Varshavskoe highway from the region, it is impossible not to notice a giant white dome that appeared overnight near the Danilovsky market. As you approach, you discern its base and discover that it is not a dome, but a ball resting on a shiny frame.

Located along the axis of the central entrance of the market, a structure resembling ice cream is a summer pavilion created by young architects as part of the AA Visiting School Moscow (AAVS Moscow) workshop, which will host lectures, seminars and master classes throughout the summer. In the evening, the surface of the dome will act as a giant media screen, and in the daytime it will serve as an attractor, attracting prying eyes and market visitors. In addition, the ball casts a large shadow, which is so lacking in the summer on the square in front of the Danilovsky market.

The idea of creating the pavilion belongs to the curator and director of AA Visiting School Moscow, the Moscow branch of the London Architectural Association, Alexandra Chechetkina. It is a kind of result of the work of the school, which has been conducting research of the Shabolovka area for three years in the format of two-week workshops. From the urban scale of the first year through the fantasy design of environmental objects for the townspeople of the second year, the AA summer school consistently went to create a real object that would become the hallmark of this place.

“Actual problems and potentials of one territory through the prism of different scales and methods. The result of this three-year study will be not only the pavilion, but also a book about the area, about how we see its development. It will also be published in English, which, we hope, will support interest in this unique territory associated with constructivism and modernism, not only in our country, but also abroad,”says Alexandra Chechetkina, head of AA Visiting School Moscow, on the opening of the pavilion.

During the workshops, the school acquired partners who support them. The Vanguard Center has been involved in the research for the entire three years, providing a venue for seminars and advising students.

Danilovsky market as a place for the construction of the object was not chosen by chance - in addition to the iconic architecture, it attracts attention by its current approach to the market function as “not just a market”, but a public place where people come not only to shop, but also to relax. That is why the idea of creating a pavilion, which would carry an educational function, was greeted by the management of the Danilovsky market with enthusiasm.

The project partner is the APEX design bureau, which supports educational initiatives: this year the architects held a series of lectures and workshops together with MARSH, and are also planning to cooperate with the Higher School of Economics; Both MARSH and HSE have been AA Visiting School in past years. APEX participates in the preparation and development of a program of lectures and seminars for the whole summer.

The process of creating the pavilion, from the start of design to its opening, took only two weeks - this is how long the AAVS Moscow workshop takes. This year 20 students took part in it, among them were first-year students of Moscow Architectural Institute, third-year students of MARCH and one student from Zurich; five students participate repeatedly. Curator Alexandra Chechetkina, who united colleagues with practical and academic experience, is Blanca Garcia Gardelugi, Leonid Slonimsky, Rodion Eremeev and Tamara Muradova. All of them used an experimental method of intellectual collaboration, the curator emphasizes.

The first days were devoted to the establishment of teamwork. Already on the second stage, the students were divided into five groups, each of which had to create layouts of public spaces corresponding to fantasy situations, for example, for a world where the Internet no longer exists. Last year, they simulated the situation of the apocalypse in the city. This part of the workshop, repeated from year to year, is aimed at activating the creative principle, and in this case, it also helped the search for the image of the future pavilion.

The next step was acquaintance with the technical task - to create an object that would stand out from the environment with its architecture and at the same time could serve as an open urban area, and, if necessary, would turn into a compact space for a narrower circle of people.

After a joint choice of the image - a ball on a frame - the teams were divided according to the industry principle: one was responsible for the structure of the frame, the other for the transforming shell, the third for the interior and furniture design, and the fourth for branding and video projection onto the pavilion.

The development of the frame was consulted by the designer Maria Boldyreva, who helped in the design of the units: given the public purpose of the building, its reliability was one of the fundamental principles. The wooden structure "works" like a barrel, and the weighted base gives it additional stability.

In accordance with the customer's wishes, two variants of the pavilion shell were developed: with blackout curtains and the familiar pattern of trunk bags, traditionally associated with shuttle traders.

The construction of the pavilion required from the students not only physical efforts, but also managerial skills: they themselves negotiated with contractors, ordered materials, which is important for understanding the intricacies of an architect's work.

“Acting as a tutor at a workshop, from the very beginning I tried to convey to students the experience of teamwork - in the case when a project should be completed by a certain date, it is especially important to be able to negotiate. Of all the AA workshops in which I participated both as a student and as a tutor, this one is special: it gave the opportunity to see the implementation of an idea in a short time, and it's especially nice that you yourself had a hand in it. Perhaps, I have never experienced such satisfaction from any of my work,”one of the tutors of this year Leonid Slonimsky, architect of the KOSMOS Architects bureau, who designed the NIKE pavilion, which recently opened in Gorky Park, shared his impressions.

The importance of the correct choice of tutors for field work with students was noted by Aleksandra Chech'tkina: “In many ways, the fact that we met such deadlines is the merit of the tutors who have real experience in the implementation of such objects. Each of them, Tamara Muradova, Leonid Slonimsky and Rodion Eremeev, has an understanding of how to properly plan the process, what is work with contractors and suppliers, and how architectural supervision is conducted. At the same time, they have a drive that was passed on to the students and together, as one architectural bureau, we were rooting for the final result."

“Each of the students literally had a hand in the pavilion, for some it was the first experience of working with the material. During the construction process, it turned out that one of the students was working in the market and making wooden crafts there, his skills were very useful, and he willingly shared them with other participants,”says tutor Tamara Muradova.

The completion of construction and the unofficial opening of the pavilion was accompanied by the presentation of AA diplomas. In fact, this event became the first in the summer program of the SHAR pavilion at the Danilovsky market. Ekaterina Lebedeva, representative of the Danilovsky market, congratulated the workshop participants on the excellent result: “We are proud that we have managed to cooperate with AAVS, which resulted in a truly striking object. We have big plans for this pavilion, and together with AA and APEX, we are developing a public program of events related to architecture, new urban development practices and the involvement of citizens in this discourse."
