Gymnasium named after E. M. Primakov is an unusual school. It accepts children from the age of three, and education from the first day is conducted in two languages - Russian and English. Today the gymnasium includes a kindergarten for 225 children and a school for 550 children. The rating of the educational institution is high, the pupils are selected on a competitive basis and, despite the paid tuition, the gymnasium today cannot accept everyone. The director of the gymnasium, Maya Otarievna Maisuradze, sees a way out of the situation in the development of an educational institution on the model of the Sochi "Sirius": it is planned that about 500 children from different regions of the country will come here for short-term programs. And this requires the appropriate infrastructure, including dormitories for students and teachers, a substantial part of whom are native speakers of English.

“Maya Otarievna puts so much enthusiasm, intelligence and energy into her initiative,” says Nikita Yavein, “that she can rightfully be considered not only the main ideologist of the project, but also the co-author of the architectural solution”. For Nikita Yavein, this is another unique school, after the Boris Eifman Dance Academy, GSOM SPbGU and Sirius. The stake on the latest trends in the educational process - "multiplication of communications" and "mixing of strata" - gave rise to a solution with a multifunctional atrium - a technique that Studio 44 architects use quite often. The initial situation in Odintsovo is not the simplest one. In this case, the Moscow region became the starting point for a structure that is complex, but elegant in its logic, and, moreover, imbued with the ideology of a “new school”.

The gymnasium is currently located in a three-storey building, which is quite developed and complex in terms of the area of development. On the surrounding territory of the village of Razdory, built up mainly with individual housing construction, it demonstrates a fundamentally different scale. The new building, which was needed for the development of the gymnasium, was supposed to introduce a third scale according to the architects' idea - a transitional link between finely dispersed private buildings and the existing volume.

Landing a building on the site turned out to be more difficult than on Nevsky Prospekt, - says Nikita Yavein: “We built a lot in the center of St. Petersburg, but I honestly don't even know such problems with networks, where owners would fight for every meter of land. These problems forced us to change the project several times. As a result, the site shrank and acquired a complex shape, within which the architects managed not only to place everything that was conceived, avoiding overconsolidation, but also to beautifully expand the function in space, observing a certain semantic hierarchy of the educational process.

“We tried to capture the geometry of this space and develop it into a structure based on the ideology of the modern educational process. We are talking about spaces of socialization and communication, which in advanced schools today come to the fore even in the early stages of education. Children communicate and learn from each other - no isolation, let them make noise! The game format of training, informal communication with teachers stimulate self-education. And our task is to create conditions for this by means of architecture,”says Nikita Yavein.

It is quite natural that the space of this universal communication, as well as the planning center of the school, is the atrium. In addition to the meaning-making one, he also has a utilitarian task - for several days a year about 1300 people should fit here - parents, guests, sponsors who come to celebrate dates. It was simply impossible to make an assembly hall next to the school, which will be locked 360 days a year.

The spatial core, as it were, magnetizes the "chaotically" scattered around it functional blocks expressing the "average" scale found. Each of them has its own "face". Science, Humanities, Art, Sports, as well as the entrance lobby, the dining room and the Stage - are executed with their own set of architectural techniques, so that the compositionally new building seems to be spliced from “different buildings”. A clear hierarchy is encrypted in the "randomness" of their location: depending on the value of the function in the general educational process, the "measure of invasion" of the block into the territory of the atrium is also determined. So, Science and Sport appear to be a little isolated, and the dining room and the Humanities are almost completely revealed in the atrium.

“We have built these volumes on the basis of the geometry of the site, rather rigidly. Then they determined the hierarchy of their "introduction" into the atrium, the space of which could not be inflated, and tried to interpret all this in the form of a kind of landscape. The result is a village or town with its main facades facing the "square" - the auditorium. These facades are surrounded by galleries that connect the premises on the second level, and during events serve as spectator balconies,”says Ivan Kozhin, chief architect of the project.

The main element of the landscape is a broken staircase - it is also an amphitheater, opening with its complex geometry towards the stage block. The forum ladder is not just a popular technique, but even mandatory in modern Western schools. In the gymnasium, it also turns out to be saturated with its internal function: it is a library with an open fund for storing books, peripheral “hills” and “grottoes” in the form of stepped “ziggurats” where you can study and read in solitude. The vast space is covered by a cellular loose structure leaning on the wood of columns - it spreads and blinds the blocks into a single whole.

According to the layout, the thematic blocks are quite autonomous and have individual solutions. The Humanities block, for example, is conceived as a collection of small auditoriums with their own intimate recreation. The Art block contains a system of halls with overhead lighting for dancing, music, and arts classes. There are no usual corridors between them: the spatial connection is carried out freely, through the atrium. All auxiliary functions - engineering, wardrobes, bathrooms - are taken out to the basement floor. The relatively isolated third floor is given over to teachers' rooms, and the director's office is also located here.

In addition to the inner "square", the complex also has a street - an inner courtyard of the existing gymnasium. In the decision of "Studio 44" it acquires a certain degree of solemnity, which gives the full right to be called a square. This is where the “porticos” of the lobby blocks and the Stage, connecting the outer and inner space of the school, go out.

The main vestibule is a paraphrase of the antique peripter, freely "scattering" the columns around the light glass volume and thus making it clear that the learning process here is far from classical. The block of the adjacent Stage, which can simultaneously work both for the atrium hall and for the open area, is massive in contrast due to the use of bricks. It emerges as a powerful bell with a promising neoclassical "portal" in the spirit of the architecture of the Italian rationalists A. Lieber or G. Terragni. But at the same time, the portal is interpreted asymmetrically, which seems to hint at some kind of "democratization" of the classics, freedom of interpretation, the absence of the usual classical schemes in this school. So, the glazed volume of the staircase on one side is echoed by the line of columns on the other.

Despite the difference in techniques, in general, all these solutions seem to obey a single code: this is a deliberately enlarged scale and pylons emphasizing it, a contrasting combination of brick and glass. The most distant Sports block is like a transitional link to the round volume of the dormitory for teachers, located at the edge of the site. Round windows and windows appear in it, with an outline resembling "thermal" ones and, as it were, preparing the appearance of a "radical" mini-Colosseum.

The student dorms located in the northern part of the territory are more traditional, rectangular. If the “Colosseum” is interpreted as a large “Roman” form, then the architecture of the square-type dormitories is emphatically “modern”. It has a "suburban" scale, something Scandinavian, inspired by the use of specially processed wooden boards in the decoration. However, the internal structure is the same everywhere: the rooms are grouped around small recreations or atriums, and open into them with balconies-galleries.

The environment that encourages children to communicate and interact is not limited to the walls of the building and freely splashes into the surrounding landscape, entangled with paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Presenting the project "Studio 44" at the recent "Zodchestvo", the chief architect of the Moscow region, Alexandra Kuzmina, noted that it was possible to get out of the difficult situation of the site so elegantly, to "plant" the building under conditions of continuous restrictions, in order to leave free territory for recreation. only by sensitively grasping the desired scale. The architects did it. Another proof of this is the hit of the project in the top of the international festival WAF, where Nikita Yavein appears with enviable consistency.
