In pursuit of the publications of the winning project and two finalist projects of the competition for the concept of a park on Tuchkov Buyan - five projects out of eight that did not receive prizes, but are nevertheless interesting.

Forest

Kengo Kuma and Associates and Vladimir Djurovic Landscape Architecture Featuring: BuroHappold Central Europe.

The Kengo Kuma bureau's concept is the easiest to distinguish and remember: it is a piece of Karelian forest framed by St. Petersburg ensemble buildings. The visualizations are reminiscent of the before / after collages that local historians make: as if in this particular place the time was rewound 300-400 years ago and paused. For granite Petersburg it looks unusual and intriguing.

Almost the entire territory of the park is occupied by trees - they "flood", explode with color, displacing everything urban. Between them there are granite boulders, forest paths, a lake, streamlined small architectural forms resembling pebbles in Japanese. The main object is a pergola with a characteristic kusudama wooden roof, under which all the objects of the park are hidden, including the greenhouse. In summer, the space of the greenhouse and the park is one - the landscape literally continues inside, the greenhouse captures it and "preserves" it: in winter, the contrast becomes no less dramatic than if palm trees and monsters grew here. You can walk both under the pergola and along it - there is an additional route on the roof that allows you to admire the city through the crowns of trees.

River spirit

Praxys paysage & territoire and KATARSIS Architects With the participation of: international companies Chrisan Horn, AREP, HyperCube, ASTAL, BIOTOPE and CYCLOPONICS, landscape - Evgenia Petrashen, climatology - Anushka Vazak, cultural programming - Mark Kalinin.

The authors of this concept widely admit the Neva to the park: the problem of free access to water has long been ripe in Northern Venice. Tuchkov Buyan again turns into a picturesque archipelago, and the river is complemented by a lake and a system of swampy canals. The islands are connected by bridges and paths, offering a route with an impressive change of landscape "scenery".

All objects of the park are located above the ground, from the side of Speransky Street and Dobrolyubov Avenue. This is a greenhouse, which also serves as an entrance group, a multifunctional pavilion, a cafe and a food market. All objects are made of wood - a material with which the Katarsis bureau is especially successful.

Petr Sovetnikov and Vera Stepanskaya, Katarsis Architects:

“First, congratulations to all the winners and finalists. We, as always, got great pleasure from working on the competition. This is a wonderful experience for our bureau and another step forward. Thanks again to the expert advice for their trust. The main interest of any competition is in the variety of proposals, intrigue and unpredictability of the result. All this was present here.

Together with the French partners - the Praxys landscape bureau and all team members, we have done a great and deep work in the very difficult conditions of the pandemic, the need for constant remote communication with the rest of the consortium members. The experience is new and invaluable for us.

In the project, it was important for us to investigate the theme of the dramatic relationship between the city and water, to rethink the tradition of the classic park pavilion, once again to return to the theme of wooden architecture, to try to optimally solve a number of complex urban planning problems. We believe that it turned out to be a very thoughtful, delicate project, which is based on water, air, chamber park architecture, a wealth of strong visual impressions provided by natural natural landscapes, a complex system of disclosures, meadows and view corridors, and not all kinds of entertainment. Not a single tree on the master plan stands by accident. Naturally, it was very important for us to carefully treat the theme of the relief, in this sense, everything in the project is very well-balanced and in St. Petersburg style.

The park itself is interpreted in the concept as part of a large green frame. This can be seen from its structure - the park is not enclosed within the competition area, but "flows" parallel to the Neva, merging into the overall system of green spaces. This is a project in many ways “for growth”.

In general, we have demonstrated our vision of Tuchkoy Park, and even now, after reviewing all the competitive proposals, it seems to us correct. We consider this to be the main thing. In any case, it is now part of history.

We also very much hope that the future park will not only become a new landmark of St. Petersburg, but will finally mark a new era of urban planning policy based on the creation of a green frame, the disclosure of water potential, and the emergence of new public spaces."

Seasons

Agence Ter and Philippe Rahm architectes

With participation: Carlo Ratti Associati, Concepto, international companies Setec, Avesta, Aetc. Russian consultants: engineer Kirill Mordukhaev, specialist in sustainable development Tatyana Kokhanova, dendrologist Irina Borzykh, economist Alexey Bykov.

Another reference to Russian fairy tales, this time - "Twelve Months": a fertile semantics for the demonstration of biodiversity and landscape endeavors. The authors promise that visitors, regardless of the season, will be able to see all the seasons. From the most obvious - in summer you can skate, and in winter you can watch flowering plants in greenhouses. One of the distinctive features of the concept is an artificial canal that encircles the entire park.

In addition to the canal, the park's space is lined with two main avenues connecting the main points of attraction at the "Cold" (underground) and "Hot Pole". Between these centerlines there is an orchard, a round forest glade, several amphitheaters and meadows for games and picnics. In this proposal, Akademik Likhachev Square turns into a transit point connecting Tuchkov Buyan with Aleksandrovsky Park and the Peter and Paul Fortress.

Great nature

Michel Desvigne Paysagiste, Meganom and Orchestra design With participation: Moscow divisions of international companies Unidraft, HPBS, Mobility in Chain, Ernst & Young.

"Meganom" also chooses a river as a genius of the place - although against the background of the Neva it is more likely a stream - with a picturesque riverbed, surrounded by pine trees and moss-covered granite boulders. Attention is drawn to the spectacular bubble of the greenhouse dome, which bursts out from the ground like a geyser. Several more domes-light windows are located in other parts of the park, which makes one recall the “pre-concept” of “Tuchkov Buyan”. Although here, of course, everything is much more elegant.

As in the finalists' concepts, the area is divided into a green buffer, wetlands and clearings for leisure and activities. The entrance to a single underground space is preceded by a square with an amphitheater, inside there is an ecology center, exhibition halls, auditoriums, a cafe, a bookstore, an information center, a conference hall and other facilities.

Nature and culture

Bjarke Ingels Group Featuring: BuroHappold NYC

Bjarke Ingels spreads a green "carpet path" in front of the Boris Eifaman Dance Theater - through the entire park, almost the Honey Meadow of the Central Park of Culture and Leisure or (Parisian!) Field of Mars. This concept seems to be the least "natural", it has a lot of glass and stone, sharp corners and straight lines. But there is also a pronounced approach to the Neva with an elevated triangle of the observation deck for all the main attractions, dramatic foreshortenings and a spacious underground part, which tends to be more spectacular than invisible.
