The name The Smile - "Smile" - was coined by the developer based on the building plan: its main facade, facing 126th Street in East Harlem, is slightly concave, resembling a smiling mouth. A perpendicular wing extends from the middle of the rear façade towards 125th Street. This configuration allowed diversifying the layout of the apartments, providing them with views of the city and the Harlem River.
On the facades, patinated metal panels and windows covering the entire floor height alternate in a checkerboard pattern. The dark exterior contrasts with the colorful tiles of the entrance lobbies, which are reminiscent of the recent "Caribbean journey" of BIG founder Bjarke Ingels. The floors of the elevator halls are also brightly decorated, but in general, the interior of both public areas and apartments is designed in monochrome colors, the only exception is wooden parts that have retained their natural color.
There are 223 apartments in the complex intended for rent. It was possible to rent housing at a reduced cost by taking part in a special lottery. One of 47 apartments for low-income families of different sizes could be claimed by those whose total household income is $ 38,400 - $ 73,680 per year. Studios would cost them $ 1,023 / month, a one-bedroom apartment $ 1,090 / month, two-bedroom apartments $ 1297 / month.
23 apartments were intended for families with an average income ($ 70,423 - $ 159,640 per year). For them, studio rent is $ 2054 / month, one-bedroom apartments - $ 2200 / month, two-bedroom apartments - $ 2849 / month.
From the infrastructure in the house there is a roof terrace with a swimming pool and a jacuzzi, a spa complex, a gym, a coworking space.
