Former site of Buda Mill & Grain Co. is located in the suburb of Austin - the town of Bude. This complex houses a hangar with a cotton gin (1914), four elevators, a towering grain auger and a large equipment shed. All of them now either play the role of an industrial setting, or have acquired a new function, and are also supplemented by three new buildings.
The result is a 2,500 m2 complex, occupied by cafes, shops, a beauty salon and fitness center, as well as meeting and public areas.
The architects tried to preserve the appearance of the industrial facility. Typical of their approach was the reconstruction of the "Bolshoi" - a steel-structured equipment shed (560 m2). Its first cell was turned into a "Texas-scale" porch, the next was glazed, with special attention paid to the quality of this transparent barrier. The profiles between the glass panels at the back support steel supports that used to be part of the shed frame, but were redundant during the renovation.
The auger conveyor is the basis for the new Buda Mill & Grain Co. sign, also designed by Cushing Terrell.
The brick building for the gin was supplemented with concrete and steel parts, with all of the old brick removed being used in other components of the project.
The theme of connecting the old and the new is continued in the design of public spaces protected from the scorching Texas sun; this protection also frames the views of historic buildings. Retaining concrete walls with traces of plank formwork deserve special mention.
