Wright designed the 18-building complex (12 completed) from 1938 until his death. This work became for him an opportunity to build a whole “city” according to his plan, which the architect had always dreamed of. Therefore, the campus received such a loud name - "Child of the Sun".
Its central structure - the Water Dome fountain of 74 jets located in a circle with a diameter of 50 m - turned out to be too complicated technically for the middle of the 20th century, therefore, F. L. Wright succeeded only in 2007: it became the first since 1966 of his building, erected according to the original project for the original customer. This enterprise was included in an extensive program of restoration of the unique ensemble, which has suffered over the past decades from the effects of rain and wind (the buildings are built of local porous stone) and later additions. The campus rebuilding work is due to be completed in 2010, but Wright's second "publication" of this work will take place this month. On May 15, the public will be presented for the first time, along with a variety of photographic materials, her original drawings and drawings at the retrospective exhibition "Frank Lloyd Wright: Inside Out" at the Guggenheim Museum.
The Sun Child ensemble is a collection of buildings of various functions, connected by covered walkways with a total length of 2.5 km, reminiscent of the orange trees that grew on the campus. Among the buildings of light stone, with the characteristic large roof overhang of Wright's buildings, stand out the only planetarium in his work and a round theater filled with light, as well as two chapels decorated with stained glass windows.
