Auschwitz. To remember

Illustration: startfortalents.net
Illustration: startfortalents.net

Illustration: startfortalents.net The concentration and death camp at Auschwitz (the German name for the city is Auschwitz) is one of the main symbols of Nazi brutality. About 20,000 prisoners were held there at a time. In total, during the existence of the camp in 1940-1945, according to officially accepted data, one and a half million Jews, Roma, Polish members of the Resistance movement, Soviet prisoners of war died there, but the number of victims in reality could have been much higher.

Today Auschwitz is a quiet city with a population of about 40,000, which has retained the heavy atmosphere of a tragic past.

The participants in the competition are faced with a difficult task: to develop a project for a Memorial Cultural Center, which should include a conference hall, theater and creative workshops, while paying tribute to the memory of the victims of Nazism.

The High Line. Photo: www.awrcompetitions.com New York's High Line Park is a great example of how once abandoned territories become energetically environmentally positive spaces. What's more, the transformation of this former elevated railroad has sparked a wave of redevelopment in the surrounding areas in Chelsea.

The organizers propose to continue this trend and build a building on the parking lot next to the park that will represent a new relationship between man and nature - a vertical green farm that also includes a residential function.

The Monumental Arena © Sergi Larripa Photo: en.wikipedia.org The Monumental Arena, built in 1914, is an architectural monument in Barcelona, which is a curious mixture of Moorish and Byzantine architecture. The Arena has been a symbol of bullfighting for many years, until in 2012 bullfighting was officially banned in Catalonia.

The arena is one of the attractions of Barcelona, surrounding the famous Plaza de les Glories, which, at the suggestion of the City Council, should become the new city park. The organizers ask to combine in one project the proposals for the transformation of the Monumental Arena and Glories Square, as well as to think about how these two objects can be connected with each other at the architectural and cultural levels.

Detroit train station for art

Detroit train station. Illustration: student.archmedium.com/ Detroit, Michigan's largest city, was once an important industrial center for the country and home to the factories of automobile giants such as Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. In the 1960s, with the arrival of cars from Europe and Japan to the American market, production volumes in Detroit gradually decreased and over time the city lost its position.

Today, on an area of 359 square kilometers, there are more than 80,000 empty buildings and plots, as well as more than 30,000 abandoned houses. Despite the current decline, many see the future of Detroit in art: Today, artists from all over the world come here because of affordable housing and low prices for goods and services, as well as a free atmosphere.

The aim of the competition was to create an Arts Center on the basis of an abandoned railway station building, which will include artists' workshops, exhibition halls and retail spaces. In addition, the building should also accommodate a small hotel for art lovers and various conference rooms.

The competition is aimed at solving the problem of adaptation and socialization of older people in modern society.

In their project, the contestants must solve a number of problems for the successful social integration of this category of citizens:

  • convenient location of housing.
  • modern means of communication.
  • harnessing the talents, skills and knowledge of older people for the needs of society.
  • preservation of the individuality and personal space of residents.
  • availability of basic social services: food, education, recreation, etc.
  • physically and psychologically safe environment.

The object can be designed for any region or city in the world with proper justification (a little research will need to be done before designing). The main thing is that the competition project does not represent a "ghetto" for the elderly.
