Rego, considered the largest Portuguese artist of our time, herself chose the architect for the "House of Histories" (this is the official name of the museum). It was probably important for her to shade her emotionally rich canvases with the restrained background of Souto de Moura architecture. However, in this project he moved away from strict minimalism: this was reflected both in the chosen material (this is red raw concrete) and in the composition (the main role is played by two "iconic" pyramidal towers).
In such a solution, one can see the features of regionalism: the paired "pyramids" are neither an abstract geometric shape, nor, moreover, a reference to the architecture of the Ancient World: the architect was inspired by the huge conical pipes of the kitchen stoves of the Royal Palace of Sintra near Lisbon. In the museum, these forms in some way retained their function: in one tower there is a cafe, in the other - a souvenir shop.
The building itself consists of four buildings, converging around the central room - the hall of temporary exhibitions. The walls of the exhibition spaces are covered with light plaster, the floor is paved with gray marble quarried near Kayshkash. The museum also has an auditorium with 200 seats.
