The hotel, proudly named Fogo Island Inn, is actually a multifunctional social and cultural center, only part of which is reserved for hotel rooms. In addition to the usual hotel infrastructure bar, restaurant, gym and sauna, this complex also includes a gallery, cinema and library. The latter contains materials on the history, geography and culture of Fogo and Newfoundland, off the coast of which this small rocky island is located. The construction of a facility here with such a diverse functional program was initiated by the Shorefast Foundation and is intended to increase the "tourist attraction" of Fogo.
In plan, the building resembles the letter X, one "stick" of which is oriented strictly along the east-west axis, and the second, longer one, faces southwest and northeast and is parallel to the coastline. In the first, two-story "stick" of a smaller area, public functions are concentrated, and at the same time it serves as the basis for a more elongated four-story building, the cantilever arm of which is also supported by thin metal supports installed at different angles to the ground. The façades of the complex are clad in black spruce, a tree typical of Fogo and Newfoundland. Native materials and objects, including furniture and textiles produced by local artisans, are also actively used in the design of interiors of public spaces and rooms. By the way, Todd Saunders himself was born on the island of Newfoundland.
As already mentioned, the hotel has a total of 29 rooms. Their area ranges from 32 to 102 m2, and most of the rooms have their own wood-burning stoves. The largest rooms are located on the top floor, and three of them, due to the slope of the roof, even receive additional mezzanine levels, where the architects placed the bedrooms.
The technical premises of the hotel - laundry, boiler room and warehouse - are taken out in a separate block. Generators and solar collectors are also located here. The building was designed taking into account modern environmental technologies. In particular, its frame is made of steel with high thermal resistance, and all windows are made of energy efficient glass. A rainwater collection system is installed on the roof, which, after filtration, is reused in the sewerage and heating system of the complex.
The space between the technical block and the main building has been turned into a chamber landscaped area - this is where the main entrance to the Fogo Island Inn faces.
