The project was ordered by local residents, it became one of the measures for the development of the city and the "improvement of the qualifications" of the townspeople: in addition to sports goals, the center trains workers for oil platforms, where the ability to climb well is very important. The building with a total area of 900 m2 is located in the port, on the very shore of the fjord and serves as a community center for the entire Ondalsnes: in addition to changing rooms, a climbing wall and a separate bouldering room, it houses a library, an exhibition hall, a cafe, an auditorium and an administration office. The sports function is concentrated in a high, really rock-like volume, and all additional rooms are located in the low, rectangular part of the building, which received a pitched roof.
This is not the first time Rayulf Ramstad uses such a composition (you can recall him
a wooden church in Knarvik or a glass restaurant located very close to the famous "Troll Wall"), but in this case, it is probably the most justified, as it almost literally repeats the surrounding mountain landscapes. The similarities are added by a pixilated coating of metal and wood plates in gray, brown and white. The proportion of white blotches gradually increases towards the top of the tower, as if imitating a snow-covered peak.
The volume, ideally inscribed in the local landscape, is, of course, intended to become a new symbol of the city. It is almost devoid of windows: only a few diamond-shaped openings break the covering of the lower part of the building. From the inside, they are perceived as frames for spectacular landscapes. Moreover, the tower, devoid of such slots, received continuous glazing in its lower part. It is here that the entrance to the center is located: such a solution made it possible to further emphasize the social significance of the new object and connect its internal space with the surroundings.
