The railway junction complex dating back to the middle of the 20th century will receive a new street facade in the form of a 550-meter one-story "ribbon" with shops. A taller, more compact, ginger-colored volume will grow out of it: offices and a conference center will be located there. But the most noticeable new element will be the V-shaped volume of the terraces with landscaping facing inward of this "slingshot". Its outer sides will be mirrored: railway tracks will be reflected in their vertical surfaces. Thus, the energetic movement of trains will enter the panorama of the city.
South Station is a key hub for Eurostar high-speed trains: it is the terminus from London, where passengers have to change to other lines or to trains on the French TGV network. The significance of the terminal as a key junction of high-speed rail lines in Europe demanded its transformation into a "landmark" structure.
