Piazza Euskadi ("Basque Country") is located between the Ensanche district with buildings from the 19th century. and the development area of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, where the Frank Gehry Guggenheim Museum, the Deusto University campus with the Raphael Moneo library, etc. are located.
Work to transform the busy transport hub into a public space began in 2008, but the financial crisis forced Balmory to completely redesign the project, dubbed "Crisis Square". As a result, its budget amounted to 1.37 million euros - one sixth of the original.
The area of the square is crossed diagonally by a main walkway with three "pockets" for resting, where the seats are made of recycled rubber. Each of the three is solved in a different way: one has oval "sofas", the other has stands and puddles, and the third has flowering shrubs and a 100-year-old lagerstremia tree.
There is also a walking path along the perimeter of the square, and under its northern part there is an underground garage for 1000 cars.
