Within the framework of the V Moscow Biennale of Architecture and the XXI International Exhibition of Architecture and Design Arch Moscow, the conference “Signs of cities. Best regional practices in the field of development and renovation”. The conference is part of a large project, which also includes an all-Russian prize and an exhibition, at which 14 cities with their cultural achievements were presented. The organizers plan to send the exhibition on tour across Russia, gradually increasing the number of cities represented at it, as well as to continue collecting the best development projects implemented in Russia in order to study and popularize good beginnings.
The initiator and organizer of the project "Signs of cities" was the communication agency "Rules of communication" and its leader Yulia Zinkevich - the author and curator of all parts of this large-scale story. The conference was co-organized by the ARCHiPEOPLE community, and the producer was Lyudmila Malkis.
Developers, architects, project initiators and specialists responsible for their development from St. Petersburg, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Sochi, Voronezh, Novosibirsk, Krasnodar, Kaliningrad, Vladivostok, Murmansk and other Russian cities took part in the conference discussions.

Renovation and reconstruction
The Renovation and Reconstruction block showed projects for the reconstruction of the Arktika Hotel in Murmansk, the Zarya Center for Contemporary Art in Vladivostok, the Kamelia resort complex in Sochi, and the Printing House in Yekaterinburg. adaptation of the Arsenal building in the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod to the NCCA. Objects of different scale and historical significance were united by the fact that each of them is a significant place in its city and, after reconstruction, became a point of attraction for citizens.
The section was moderated by Ignat Bushukhin (RBC Real Estate) and Evelina Ishmetova, RRG, Chairman of the Expert Council for Redevelopment of the RSUD.
Hotel "Arctic" in Murmansk
By the efforts of the architect Nikolai Lyzlov and RD Construction, which is part of the international holding RD Group, by order of the Azimut hotel chain, the Arktika hotel - the highest building on the Kola Peninsula - has turned into a multifunctional center that meets modern requirements. Built in the 1980s, it is a representative of Soviet modernism, and during the reconstruction Nikolai Lyzlov, a staunch follower of this architectural trend, has retained a strict image that is well known to the townspeople and loved by them. This is a rare example of an attentive attitude towards the Soviet legacy.

“Renovation is always more difficult than building from scratch. Exhibition centers and meeting rooms have appeared. The German technology of applying decorative plaster has been introduced, which performs the function of insulation. An underground parking was made, which is not easy in permafrost conditions and such difficult soil, especially in the conditions of an existing building."

“It took a significant amount of time to formulate new functionalities for this building. As a result, it was decided that the hotel function remains one of the essential, 184 modern rooms have appeared. An office function with a volume of approximately 8,000 m2 has appeared, as well as an underground parking lot, main retailers."

“When we showed the project for the first time, I was worried about how it would be perceived by the city. But when we said that we want to preserve the appearance of the Arktika Hotel as it is, it met with complete unanimity and approval. Everything worked out here - an interested investor, wonderful builders, city support, public support”. *** Arsenal in the Kremlin in Nizhny Novgorod
An architectural monument of the middle of the 19th century, one of the largest buildings of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, has turned into an exhibition area of the NCCA.
Anna Gore, Director of the Nizhny Novgorod NCCA:
“The concept of reconstruction appeared a long time ago, back in 1994, when we realized that Nizhny Novgorod was absent on the map of international contemporary culture. The Arsenal building, located in the Department of Defense, seemed suitable. But then there was a long, serious, difficult work to convince society that there should be a Center for Contemporary Art. And in parallel, work was going on in the bowels of the Ministry of Defense, which did not need an extra load in the form of an architectural monument. These two tendencies converged, and in 2003, that is, in fact, after a ten-year period of thinking about the problem, we got the Arsenal building”.

“We were able to find such compromises and such forms of modernizing the building that did not come into conflict with the current restoration rules and laws on the protection of monuments. This is one of those buildings that really is an indicator of the modern life of Nizhny Novgorod, and precisely because of the fact that modern culture, the culture of the future, lives in the old, ancient Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. ***
Center for Contemporary Art in Vladivostok
Another center of contemporary art has appeared in the brick buildings of the former garment factory "Zarya".
Alisa Bagdonaite, curator of the Center for Contemporary Art "Zarya":
Zarya is an alternative place to the city. There is a large pedestrian zone, studios for artists, children's workshops, and a library. The area of the object is 25,000 m2. These are seven buildings, each of which has been consistently reconstructed, everything has changed, right down to the wiring and fire extinguishing systems. The project was conceived as a creative cluster, therefore, the number of storeys in buildings practically did not increase. All brickwork has been preserved, large windows, high ceilings. ***
Resort complex "Camellia" in Sochi
One of the best buildings built in Sochi in the 1930s. A large-scale reconstruction was carried out by the Hals-Development company according to the architectural project of the Ginzburg Architects bureau.

“A 6.5 hectare park has been preserved on a unique territory. The historic building, which originally served as a sanatorium, has been meticulously restored in the smallest detail and is now the architectural dominant of the entire complex."

“In the city of Sochi, the attitude towards historical buildings is very different from Moscow or even Nizhny Novgorod. The understanding that the monuments need to be preserved and restored was absent and absent here. The central building, which, in my opinion, is one of the best houses in Sochi, along with the sea and railway stations, was brought to such a state that it could only be demolished. In fact, we recreated the building exactly according to the original design. Laser scanning was done, details were recreated according to the drawings. There were also difficulties with the municipal networks, as everywhere in Sochi, and with the relief, the drop in this section is about 20 meters, and of course, with the greenery, which very densely covered the park and which we did not want to destroy. ***
"House of the press" in Yekaterinburg
The multifunctional project was opened in the former printing house "Uralsky Rabochiy", in a building-monument of the constructivism era of 1929-1930s.

“There is a lot of eclecticism in this room, because it is designed for a variety of events. The goal was to create a unique multi-format cultural space for our city, a new center of cultural and entertainment life, in which the most important artists, not pop, but underground, would perform. The building was designed by the architect Nikita Zhilyakov. ***
New residential construction
Projects from Krasnoyarsk (RC “Yuzhny Bereg”), Krasnodar (eco-city “Europe”), St. Petersburg (SMART-projects), Novosibirsk (microdistrict “Evropeysky Bereg”, RC “Kedrovy ", RC" Bavaria "), Kazan (RC" Cherry Orchard "). The block about housing was moderated by Philip Tretyakov, founder of RERA, Deputy General Director of the RSG Akademicheskoe, and Anastasia Podakina, VTB Arena Park.
Microdistrict "European" in Tyumen
One example of improving the quality of urban life was demonstrated by Vera Kvitkovskaya, director of Brusnika. Managing Bureau . She pointed out the importance of creating a comfortable and developed urban environment, which until recently received little attention from both developers and buyers themselves. “The good news is that people change very quickly,” notes Vera Kvitkovskaya. - We see in our neighborhoods how quickly yards, sports grounds, squares are filled. It seems important to us to promote the culture of consumption”.
RC "Avangardnoe" in the Kaliningrad region
The development of the theme of a comfortable environment was demonstrated by the example of the Avangardnoye residential complexes. These are low-rise mini-cities with a total area of 400,000 m2, on an area of almost 100 hectares, taking into account the interests of all groups of the population. This includes housing, and the construction of social, household and sports infrastructure.

RC "Europeya" in Krasnodar
An even more ambitious project, which appeared in 2007, is distinguished not only by a well-thought-out infrastructure, but also by a low building density.

“Originally it was a multi-format cottage community. Five-story buildings, a community center, and cottage development were planned. There were doubts: how will different formats exist within the same project? Life has shown that this is quite possible. The idea was to create a satellite city as close as possible to the European way of life. The area, around there are shops, recreational facilities, artificial reservoirs. A little further - social facilities, a school and a kindergarten. Having implemented the project, we do not leave it, we hold holidays, events, improve the engineering infrastructure. ***
Public buildings
The Public Building section presented the best examples of public buildings built in recent years in Russian cities, such as the Yeltsin Center in Yekaterinburg, the Water Sports Palace in Kazan, the Chess Academy in Khanty-Mansiysk and others. Anastasia Kremenchuk from Arendator.ru and Yulia Shishalova from Archspeech.com moderated the block and asked the participants questions.
Yeltsin Center in Yekaterinburg
The center was opened in the homeland of the first president of Russia in 2015 at the initiative of the Boris Yeltsin Foundation. In 2001, a competition for an operator was held; the American company Ralph Appelbaum Associates won, and it was commissioned to develop the concept of the museum as a cultural space. The center is based on the existing retail and office building, the architectural project of the reconstruction of which was developed by the Moscow architect Boris Bernasconi, who “dressed” the building in perforated light metal.
Vadim Naumenko, Deputy Executive Director of the Presidential Center B. N. Yeltsin:
“It was difficult to place the museum in a circular shape (part of the building was built in the shape of a washer). Our American colleagues proposed the image of a rotating turbine in which the halls are located like blades. You pass this blade, you are thrown into the center, you enter the next blade, and so on. And at the end you find yourself in a huge hall with Erik Bulatov's painting "Freedom". We wanted to show the difficult and ambiguous nineties as objectively as possible, but also emotionally. For this we invited the director Pavel Lungin, who created the script for the museum. " ***
Palace of water sports in Kazan
The object, which is completely different in typology, but no less significant for its city, was opened in 2011. Built according to a project by SPEECH bureau, it is one of the largest sports complexes in Russia, it can also be used as a universal Sports Palace.
The manager of SPEECH spoke about the design features of the facility Anton Pavlov: “We wanted to make it as environmentally friendly and warm as possible. We studied many historical moments associated with Tatarstan and Islam, and noticed that the tree is very widely represented in the republic. The result is an object with an open timber frame.
Our love is a jumping tower, a real art object. It turned out to be complex both technologically and in terms of manufacturing. We even had to order a special uniform from an aviation company. Anton Pavlov also spoke about other SPEECH projects, including the Krasnodar stadium.
Also at the conference was presented a whole block of new buildings in Novosibirsk, linked by a common concept - parametric architecture
BC "Cobra", pavilion "Ball" (cafe), BC Flower, campus of Innopolis, Biotechnopark "Koltsovo" and other objects that were developed "Carrying Systems" company (SpaceStructure technology). It is a complex, modern glass architecture reminiscent of bionic forms - a caterpillar, a flower.
The emergence of such an unusual architecture in the harsh Siberian conditions is explained by Aleksey Kashin, director of the Bearing Systems company: “For several years now, the main criterion of our work has been novelty. But how to make your fantasy come true, violating architectural laws, but not violating the very mechanics? It is necessary to remove as many restrictions in the design as possible. Today for this we have a production base, an experimental workshop, designers, production workers, assemblers. Of course, such a shell is 50-70 percent more expensive than the standard one. On the other hand, the attractiveness of each such building increases significantly; for our city they are literally unique, places of attraction.
For the region as a whole, glass buildings are a dream that a few years ago was unattainable due to climatic features. We have developed a unique technology of facades, which allows us to make really efficient warm houses”. ***
Chess Academy in Khanty-Mansiysk
Designed by Dutch architect Erik van Egeraat. A three-level building without sharp corners with unusual cut-out windows, finished with shiny zinc panels. The interior of the complex was developed by YUSI LLC in agreement with the chief architect of the facility. The transforming hall accommodates 128 playgrounds and is designed for holding events of various kinds.

“The main idea of the project is to create an unusual building, where the outside does not contain any hints of what is happening inside. The cold metal shell contrasts with its cozy, warm interior."
Ekaterina Semikhatova, PR-director of the project:
“Erik (van Egeraat) said that he put into the basis of the project the idea that chess is not just a game of the mind, it is a game of the mind for a while. And in architecture, the winner is the one whose work “plays” the best and the longest, and will be relevant for a long time. It was lucky that the governor of the city, Mr. Filipenko, shared our point of view and agreed that the city needed some kind of landmark project. Because such large projects need support and promotion. ***
New airports
Important infrastructurally significant objects that provide an incentive for the development of the whole city: Nizhny Novgorod (Strigino, 2016), Yekaterinburg (Koltsovo, 2003-2014), Samara (Kurumoch, 2015), Rostov-on-Don (Yuzhny, 2017). Project architects, as well as Evgeny Krasikov, Director of Strategic Communications, Airports of Regions Management Company, spoke about their reconstruction: Airports of Regions is one of the largest regional airport holdings in Russia, we operate four airports: in the cities of Yekaterinburg, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod and Rostov-on-Don. A typical regional airport is a shed in a field, a legacy of the late Soviet period. The situation began to change in economically strong regions. Today Koltsovo airport in Yekaterinburg is the leading regional airport in Russia, the largest and the most modern”.
Elena Potemkina, architectural bureau Nefa Architects, shares his impressions of the process of working on the project:
“There was a dull row of columns that had to be either emphasized or somehow hidden. We took the color scheme of the city, we have a multi-color palette, multi-color columns, in which communications are hidden. "Rocks" with the possibility of illumination "were placed in the central volumes."
Architect Victor Kolupaev I approached the solution of the interiors of the Kurumoch airport in Samara in a different way:
“The whole concept of the project was built on the city's space status. Samara people are very proud that the best engines were once made in their city. We were also inspired by the tourism of the sixties, the work of the Brazilian architect Niemeyer, and a little Star Wars. And the “flying saucer” crowns everything, which once again reveals the space theme in the interiors”. ***
Public spaces
In the block "Public spaces" parks, museums, cultural centers were presented. The section was moderated by Svetlana Maksimchenko (Mosgorpark, Deputy Director) and Valeria Mozganova (Business FM). A unifying feature for many of the objects presented in the section was their off-center location, the fact that their appearance helped depressive, sometimes quite marginal areas to pull up to a higher level, change the mentality and behavioral patterns of local residents.
Museum of Street Art in St. Petersburg
One of the most illustrative projects. The investor is Dmitry Zaitsev, chairman of the museum's board of trustees, and the authors of the project for the reconstruction and improvement of the territory are the Arhataka architectural bureau. Located in a working factory far outside the historical center, the museum has become a point of attraction for an active audience for the second season. The territory of the museum is divided into two zones: a permanent exhibition and a public area where temporary exhibitions and public events take place.
Andrey Zaitsev, founder and director of the Street Art Museum:
“From the territory of the plant, we have made one of the most fashionable and unique spaces, where the coolest festivals, raves and the most fashionable parties take place. We use the walls of the buildings as canvases. And every new exhibition we completely paint over everything, and everything is painted anew”.
Tatiana Pinchuk, Development Director of the Street Art Museum:
“The Street Art Museum is the only one in Russia, in the world. The production is active, and we even had an exhibition called "The Art of Art Production". The artists interacted with the workers of the plant and made an exhibition using materials that the plant produces - plastic. There is a lot of attention to us from abroad - both as an urban project and as a cultural institution. Plus, we have now initiated a large project for the government of St. Petersburg and in general on a national scale for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Because street art is a powerful trend in contemporary art. " ***
Tatarstan projects
A large number of large projects are being implemented in Tatarstan. All this is aimed at developing the environment, at improving the quality of life and the attractiveness of the territories. 140 public spaces in 45 municipalities of Tatarstan are being rethought, about 30 objects are being modernized.
Natalia Fishman, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Tatarstan:
“We are starting to implement a large number of large projects. All this is aimed at developing the environment, at improving the quality of life, at increasing the attractiveness of the territories. And, of course, first of all, for the implementation of the "Strategy of socio-economic development of the Republic of Tatarstan until 2030". 1 billion rubles of budgetary funds were allocated, for Tatarstan this is an absolutely fantastic figure. And, which is very important, another 900 million rubles were invested in the program by local entrepreneurs.
An important distinguishing feature of Tatarstan: there are no strangers, everyone is ours. And in every district there should be something for the people. And we all compete. We made a rating based on the results of last year's work and introduced a grant financing mechanism. We gave money this year for the development of territories near the water to those who worked well last year, ten leading regions.
One of these leaders is the Tukai park with a library in Nizhnekamsk. We all understand what a park is in winter, but here it is possible to transfer all the activities from the park to a well-made library for the cold season. Attendance after the innovations has grown 18 times.
Another new public space in Tatarstan appeared in Muslyumovo, one of the most remote regions of the republic. We made a public garden, a central street on which the House of Culture, an updated library, and a district museum are located. And it continues right up to the embankment, which we are doing this year.
It was an abandoned, depressive zone, which turned into a six-kilometer canal, along which various zones of activity were located, very interesting from the point of view of architecture, very atypical for Tatarstan, because there is no ornamentation, there is no “beauty and wealth”. Smooth lines, accessible environment.
What else have we done in Tatarstan? Introduced a new design practice. We make real project scenarios, then we define functional zoning. At seminars, people of different ages and different social status meet at the table. In Tatarstan, especially in smaller cities, there is a completely different degree of belonging, a sense of belonging. In a settlement where 7 to 15 thousand people live, the place of compact residence turns into a place of cohabitation, where people have a space where they go every evening. ***
Park "Scarlet Sails" in Voronezh
Another successful accomplished example of beautification. The renovation was entrusted to the French landscape architect Olivier Domé in 2011. It turned out to be a very significant space for the city, which changed the lifestyle of the residents of the district.
In record time, the park has turned from a marginal to the most visited and beloved place by the townspeople. The special pride of the park is the rose garden. 3,000 rose bushes were planted for the opening. The French company Meilland has specially bred a new variety of roses that can bloom from May to October, and named them "Voronezh".
Nikolay Shvyryaev, Director for Development of the Scarlet Sails Park:
“A large number of flowers were planted again, lawns were laid, the lighting in the park was completely reconstructed, surveillance cameras were installed, which, in our opinion, help the population to behave more dignified. The park has become in demand for cultural events, not in the Soviet format, but in modern ones. For the sixth year we have hosted the Platonov Festival, the park has become a venue for performances, concerts, the first anime festival in the country.
For us, a pleasant nuance is that the entire architecture of the park, which was originally made, is practically intact. Inhabitants who used to break, distort, render their property unusable, they have changed. ***
TEXTIL space in Yaroslavl
A similar story is developing in Yaroslavl, in the TEXTIL space. It began to revive in 2013 on the site of the former cotton warehouses of the Yaroslavl Big Manufactory with the transformation of a warehouse yard into a city square. The territory is not located in the central part of the city and poses an additional task - working with local communities and local themes.

“The site is located in a closed area, initially it was a city-factory, which is more than 300 years old, a textile production. We have assembled a team of volunteers, active citizens, and in this rather marginal area we began to build a dialogue with those people who live here, to involve them in events taking place on the site, from discussions to festivals, from exhibitions to neighborhood dinners."
Systematized and summarized the topic Oleg Shapiro, bureau Wowhaus:
“Public spaces are of different types, I personally see at least three of them, according to the type of cities.
As for a large city, such as, for example, Kazan, it has a multi-layered public life, a multi-layered public space. The activity of architects and urbanists is that we must restore the social fabric without breaks, correct it.
Another thing is a regional city, such as Kaluga, for example. Here everything happens on one central street, and there are simply no more places for social life. Here we are trying to create a completely new, additional center of gravity.
And finally, the third story - for example, Vyksa, a small town. This is a monotown. For him, we are trying to totally shape social life. We hope that this totally formed social life will overlap with those places that could be public spaces, and then these public spaces in the city will happen."
New resorts
In the block "New resorts" at the conference "Signs of cities. The best regional practices in the field of development and renovation "showed several objects of different scale and organizational form - from the respectable complex of hotels and apart-hotels" Rosa Khutor "in Krasnaya Polyana to the cluster" Nikola-Lenivets ", from the restoration of ancient villages to modern cottage settlements … Yulia Bychkova (Archstoyanie, NCCA) and Andrey Voskresensky, Kommersant helped in moderating this part of the conference.
The natural and creative cluster "Nikola-Lenivets" in the Kaluga region stood out among other objects from the long-list of this nomination as the only park in Russia with large-scale landscape installations, land-art objects from the best Russian and foreign authors. The favorites were the projects: "Cathedral Sloboda" - restoration of the best residential buildings in Ples and their adaptation for modern comfortable year-round living or summer cottages; reconstruction and development of a village with merchant estates in the historical and cultural complex "Vyatskoye" of the Yaroslavl region; modern eco-hotel "Altika" in a pine forest on the banks of the Katun River in Altai.
Konakovo River Club
A striking example of a new resort is Konakovo River Club in the Tver Region, which was described by the investor, developer Mark Kagansky and architect Alexei Rosenberg.
Mark Kagansky:
“We have returned to the urban industrial space the originally uncharacteristic natural organicity, de-urbanized the territory. They helped the townspeople, residents of Konakovo, to remember what the city was famous for. The overriding task of the project is to give birth to new molecules of society in the form of individual freedom and craving for beauty."
Konakovo River Club hosts up to a hundred events a year, and there is something to do in any season: snowmobiles, fishing, snowkite, ice skating, hockey, sports programs, music festivals. Many sailing events. Regattas of any complexity are held here - from children's to Russian championships.
Part of the resort area is given over to really good architecture. Architects Alexey Rosenberg and Peter Kostelov were invited to implement the project.
“Each category of houses in Konakovo River Club has its own look, its own scenario,” says Alexey Rosenberg. - The organization of the territory is built around the hotel, from which a circle of townhouses and houses for rent diverges - the public part of the village. On the outskirts of the resort there is a zone of private territories. And in the buffer zone, in the middle, 6-8 groups of houses with their own scenarios are being built.
In this project, we started a game. If you remember Malevich's paintings and look at our houses, you can literally find out some of the principles that are laid down here. First, each house is like a symbol, like some kind of absolute form - primary, understandable. And Malevich's second simplest principle is division. Here houses and townhouses can be divided into two parts, draw a line. One of the groups of houses is organized according to the principle "form makes form". That is, the space between the houses is about the same as the houses themselves. They organize such a Suprematist composition.
I must say that all our houses are built according to very simple mathematics. It's a simple rectangle all the time, we are manipulating combinatorics. All houses have their own scenarios, their own architectural ideas, their own manipulations with the scale. ***
Nikola-Lenivets
As for "Nikola-Lenivets", noted by the expert council, and by open voting of the award "Signs of cities. The best regional solutions in the field of development and renovation "as the best" new resort "where" you always want to return ", then its history began 25 years ago, in 1989, when the architect Vasily Shchetinin left for Nikola-Lenivets and began to invite his creative friends, among whom was the artist Nikolai Polissky, whose landscape works determined the style of the place. For more than 10 years now, the Archstoyanie festival has given a big impetus to the development of a unique territory, to which its producer Yulia Bychkova this year invited everyone to come on July 22-24. This year the theme of the festival is "Shelter".
"Winter's Dacha"
A more local project. The Park Hotel is located on the shores of Lake Ladoga, 300 kilometers from St. Petersburg, in the Karelian village of Tarulinna. This place began with the country house of Dr. Gustav Winter, which was built in 1909 in the Northern Art Nouveau style by the famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, and today it forms the core of the resort.
Elena Gudilina, Hotel Development Director, explains:
“We have a very intimate room stock, we promote the culture of out-of-town recreation, so the maximum capacity of Dacha Winter is 110 people. The architects were tasked with creating a project that would not destroy the environment, but complement it. ***
Best ideas for urban development
The “Best Idea for Urban Development” section featured projects in Kazan, Tomsk, Samara, Kaliningrad and even Yakutsk. This promising topic was moderated by Grigory Revzin, partner at Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design, and Sergey Georgievsky, representing the Center for Territorial Development.

The concept for the development of the embankments and coastal strip of the Kaban lake system in Kazan was selected based on the results of a competition. The winner, for the first time in the history of architectural competitions in Russia, was a consortium led by a bureau from China - Turenscape + MAP (China, Beijing - Russia, Moscow). The aim of the project was to create a public space in which water becomes part of the city and acts as a flexible element for everyone, in any season. Natalia Fishman, Assistant to the President of Tatarstan, spoke about him: “Dr. Yu, head of Turenscape, is an eminent architect who has implemented projects in 60 countries and more than a hundred projects in China. Their project for the Kaban lake system is a continuous landscape system along the coastline of three lakes, which connects reservoirs that are quite excluded from the urban environment and Kazan."
An important part is the involvement of local specialists in the work on the project, says Natalia Fishman: "We have an agreement with our partners from China that the architects whom we have selected to our republican team will design together with Turenscape." ***
Museum of Science and Technology
The project of the Museum of Science and Technology in Tomsk "Studio 44" by Nikita Yavein also won the competition. The image of the future museum contains allusions to the wooden fortress, which laid the foundation for the city, and to the plow boats, from which Siberian pioneers landed on the banks of the Tom River in 1604. The experience of Russian wooden architecture was multiplied in the project by the innovations of constructivism of the 1920s.
Here is what Anton Yar-Skryabin, the architect of Studio 44, told about the target audience of the project: “First of all, the space is focused on young people who study in Tomsk. There is a huge number of young people in the city, a new modern exhibition space was needed, as well as laboratories in which scientific experiments would be carried out. ***
"Heart of the City"
A long-term urban development project that answers the question of what the historical center of Kaliningrad should be like - the heart of a city with a seven-century history. The project covers
12 territories of the historical center. According to the results of the architectural competition, the architectural bureau "Studio 44" also won. The project is being developed by the Institute for Territorial Development.
“We propose to make the park on Kneiphof Island, where the preserved cathedral stands, the main public space,” says architect Ivan Kozhin, representative of Studio 44. - We are organizing six new small quarters around the park, which correspond to the historical quarters of Konigsberg and those historical cities that once made up Konigsberg. Each has its own identity, and all together it is a system of different types of spaces, embankments, open and closed courtyards, small streets, squares near the water, squares not near the water. ***
"Factory-kitchen"
Another promising project is the reconstruction of the "Kitchen Factory" in Samara (1930-1932) under the NCCA and the development of the center of Samara. The building is made in the shape of a hammer and sickle - this unusual building is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the Samara region is looking for money to implement a beautiful project, other centers of preservation of the historical heritage are being created in the city.
Vitaly Stadnikov, Deputy Dean, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Urban Studies, ex-chief architect of Samara, explains:
“We found a whole backbone of people, including deputies in local councils, who began to gather activists-land users, guarantors, in fact, of the progressive development of territories. "Tom Sawyer Fest" was held, which showed that volunteer technologies save not only money, but also time in renewing the historical environment, we renovated an entire part of the street, half a dozen houses, for only 1.920 million rubles in two months. " ***
"Olonkho Land"
One of the key projects of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) to update the national heritage and reorganize Yakutsk. It includes the creation of a large park on the shores of Lake Saisary and the Teploye channel, several residential areas, a business park, and most importantly, a large-scale cultural center.
Anton Nadtochy, Bureau "Atrium", one of the participants in the architectural competition:
“There is a very strong tradition of round dances in Yakutia. The largest round dance, in which the inhabitants of the republic lined up, even got into the Guinness Book of Records. In the architectural project, a large round-shaped area was needed in order to lead round dances on holidays, respectively, it appeared in our public area. I was surprised to what extent the people there really breathe their culture, imbued with their traditions, mythology. And we tried to saturate the territory with symbols as much as possible”. ***
Cultural and educational center in Makhachkala
Created on the initiative of the private PERI Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to create projects that provide youth access to innovative education.
Polina Filippova, Director of the PERI Foundation:
“When asked if you are satisfied with education in Makhachkala, 87 percent say no. When asked if you would like to receive additional education, 89 percent answer “yes”. Therefore, we want to create space in Makhachkala for a new education that does not meet the norms and standards to which in our country, and in Makhachkala in particular, people are accustomed to. And in this regard, the idea was born to build the Educational and Cultural Center "Perimeter", a competition of ideas for which we held together with the MARSH school. It will be a full-fledged hub with an exhibition hall, many laboratories, and a hostel for visiting lecturers. " ***
