The national stage of the 16th annual student competition "Multicomfort from Saint-Gobain" has come to an end. The main task of the project is to promote the concept of a multi-comfortable space, the essence of which is in the harmonious and coordinated development of society and the environment, respect for the historical heritage, rational use of energy and natural resources.
This year, the challenge for the participants was the reconstruction of the post-industrial area of Coignet Enterprise in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, part of which is occupied by the former industrial zone of a cement plant with warehouses. Currently, it is not a comfortable area for living with an undeveloped infrastructure.
The site is home to the world's first reinforced concrete structure - the abandoned Maison Coignet mansion, which needs to be preserved. An additional complication is that the section is sandwiched between the railway and the Seine River.
In the final projects, the contestants presented a master plan of the territory aimed at increasing the comfort and well-being of residents, and a project of residential and educational space, developed taking into account the safety of the historical objects located on the site.
The winner of the competition was a team from St. Petersburg, 2nd place - among students from Ufa, 3rd place was shared by teams from Moscow and Samara. All prize-winners will receive cash prizes, and the teams that took 1st and 2nd places will also get the opportunity to represent Russia at the international stage of the competition in Paris
3rd place, team A SOLUTION TO GENTRIFICATION
Moscow GUZ. Author Diana Kuzina, teacher Elena Aleksandrovna Bulgakova
The idea of the project is to transform the territory not only through architecture, but also through landscaping. The dense development of the residential area leaves more space for the educational zone and the forest park, which is planned to be planted with spruce and pine trees. The forest park separates the school from the roadway and the railway.
Other features:
- The prototype of the residential complex is an anthill. Its structure allows you to "play" with volumes, getting apartments with a variety of layouts. A stepped patio leads to the 1st floor, where trade and service objects are provided.
- The school building has a complex shape that repeats the terrain, which allows it to harmoniously fit the building into the landscape.
- An example of a natural BIO environment is temporary buildings made of wooden cubes 3x3 meters in the park.
The issue of preserving historical buildings has also been resolved: a museum will be located in the Maison Cogniet mansion, and a skate park will be located in the warehouse building.
3rd place, AZHOZ team
Samara State Technical University, Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (ASA SamSTU). Authors - Irina Rogova and Nikita Ryabushkin, teacher Tatyana Yanovna Vavilova
The motto of the contestants: “Increase comfort with us - mix SD2 - the square of impressions for Saint-Denis and for sustainable development”. The team identified 3 aspects of design based on the concept of sustainable development: social, environmental and economic. To reflect the idea of social equality, a coworking, cohousing and community center were designed. A single design was chosen for housing of different types. The environmental aspect is manifested in the use of energy efficient technologies. The economic one is reflected in the ability to launch commercial projects in a given territory, to create new jobs.
Other features:
- In the center of the block there is a school, from which all the positions of the plan develop.
- On the 1st floor there is a kindergarten with a courtyard, on the second there are school classes. The roof will be used for outdoor activities. The double facade of the school will protect the premises from overheating.
- A community center will operate in the building of the Maison Cogniet mansion, a library and a media center in the former warehouses of the plant.
- To maintain the cleanliness of the recreational area, a hidden vacuum waste collection system is provided.
Professor of the Department. AZHOZ ASA SamSTU, Ph. D. Tatiana Yanovna Vavilova is not the first time she participates with students in the competition. According to her, “this is the best of the student competitions. And by the complexity of the tasks, and by the organization. In it, you can not only show creativity, but also gain new knowledge that lies outside the curriculum. Students really need them in their future professional careers, and they allow us, teachers, to meet the era of innovation."
2nd place, DOUBLE AR team
Ufa State Oil Technical University. Authors - Ariadna Avsakhova and Arina Borovikova, teacher Anna Viktorovna Usova
The team conducted an urban planning analysis of the site and found that the quarter is located on the axis of the area's attractions. There is a lot of pedestrian traffic here, so the authors built a wide alley, which was supplemented with a stream. He became the basis for the concept of the entire project.
Other features:
- Public buildings open onto the alley - a kindergarten with an elementary school and a leisure center.
- The abandoned mansion will house a museum.
- To refer to the history of the place, it is proposed to use concrete as the main building material.
The design of building facades is subordinated to the general concept of energy efficiency and economy:
- balconies shade homes from the sun;
- greenery of facades improves air quality and reduces noise;
- drainpipes, in addition to their direct purpose, generate energy, provide fire extinguishing and watering.
For acoustic comfort, a parametric canopy is installed over the railway. “It is proposed here to reflect not only on the conceptual part of the project, but also to think over constructive solutions, to choose energy-efficient materials. It's great that this competition was able to show us the features of real design”- the authors of the project, Arina Borovikova and Ariadna Avsakhova, share their impressions.
1st place, G&S team
SPBGASU. Authors - Kamila Gilmutdinova and Valeria Semenova, teacher Olga Gennadievna Kokorina
“The region is not the most prosperous, but it has great potential due to the river,” the authors of the project believe. The social situation can be changed by attracting young families with children to Saint-Denis.
Features of the project:
- A diagonal pedestrian boulevard towards the embankment forms a single space for educational centers.
- The warehouse system was adapted for a kindergarten. It was merged with the school through the Leisure Center and Environmental Science Research Center.
- The abandoned mansion will house an interactive museum of building structures. Around it is a recreational area and a descent to the Seine embankment.
- Along the railway there will be a high gallery building with economy class apartments. For wealthier citizens, urban villas are provided in another part of the site.
- Safe zones have been designed for children's leisure.
- The height and density of buildings increases with the approach to the railway and the further away from the river.
The development of the quarter meets the requirements of energy efficiency and complies with the A ++ class, as well as the requirements of sustainable development, which is ensured by:
- central air conditioning system with wind turbine and solar panels on the roof;
- thermal insulation ISOVER;
- landscaping of terraces, loggias and balconies;
- using "gray" water for cisterns, cleaning;
- creating acoustic comfort.
The project forms a single space that has a beneficial effect on people's living standards.
Project participants Kamila Gilmutdinova and Valeria Semenova shared their impressions: “… we really liked that there is an opportunity to make a complex project, from pre-project analysis to a well-developed and substantiated project proposal: from general to specific. In addition, we have long been interested in the topic of sustainable development, and it was in this competition that we were able to demonstrate our knowledge in this area."
Olga Gennadievna Kokorina, Lecturer, Associate Professor of the Department of Architectural Design, SPBGASU: “A lot of effort was invested in the project, I wanted to help the girls do a really decent job, and they did it. Both the project and the results fully met expectations."
All the projects reviewed are united by the desire to create an environmentally friendly comfortable urban environment. Antoine Peyrude, General Director of Saint-Gobain in Russia, Ukraine and the CIS, emphasized that “the topic of the assignment is especially relevant for Saint-Gobain. We develop solutions to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, as well as solutions to reduce direct and indirect CO emissions2… The construction industry now accounts for about 40% of global CO emissions2that directly affects our climate”.
The social significance of the competition through the eyes of the jury of the national stage
“I consider the annual student competition“Multicomfort from Saint-Gobain”" one of the unique competitions in our country. The competition covers all the versatility of work on the project, which is still only awaiting students in their future professional life, and all this in an international format, "says Elena Shakhmina, CEO of APRIORI PROJECT.
Ilya Zavaleev, LEED AP BD + C PMP green engineer, HPBC CEO: “It is not the architect who wins, but the team that includes people of various specialties. Teams from all regions of Russia were able to take part in a real project that can be implemented in Paris as part of an international competition."
Chairman of the jury Nikita Asadov, chief architect of the Asadov bureau:
“Personally, I see the value of the competition in three things:
- teamwork on a project, which, unfortunately, is not yet often practiced in Russian architectural education;
- an integrated approach to design, thanks to which the participants worked out not only the architectural and planning concept, but also deeply immersed themselves in the engineering and technical solutions of the project;
- increased attention of the competition task to the principles of environmental friendliness and sustainable development, which are gradually becoming a generally recognized norm in urban planning and architecture."
The competition "Multicomfort from Saint-Gobain" gives an opportunity for students of architecture and construction universities to try their hand at designing an aesthetic and environmentally friendly space, to show their talent and get a unique experience in a large-scale project.
