Mosinzhproekt is holding a competition for the design of new Moscow metro stations for the fifth time since 2014. And each time the competition attracts the attention of an increasing number of Russian and foreign architects. This year, organizers received applications from 113 teams, of which 10 finalists were selected based on portfolio reviews and essays for each station. More precisely, there were actually fewer finalists, since some of the bureaus passed the qualifying stage at two stations at once.

As a result, the winners were consortia led by Zaha Hadid Architects and ASADOV Architectural Bureau. They will be asked to conclude contracts for the further development of projects and author support.

Below are both winning projects and eight more finalists, the prizes of which are indicated in accordance with the final rating of the jury.

In striving to create a station of the next generation, the architects were guided by considerations of safety, comfort and aesthetics. One of the accents is made on manufacturability - modern software and design methods are designed to provide ease of navigation, clarity of information presentation (for example, changing lighting prompts about an arriving train). Moreover, all signals are perceived at the level of intuition.

As for the stylistics of the design, the architects, according to them, preferred a light, modern design with no frills and believe that just such a station can become a topical addition to the Moscow metro network. Although it turned out to be extremely plastic and flying, the bureau's handwriting is quite guessed: in Moscow there have not yet been such canopies over the entrances to the metro, similar in equal measure to mushrooms and flying saucers.

However, there was no metro station designed by Zaha Hadid's bureau either. The projects of this bureau regularly win Russian competitions, but they are not yet so lucky with their implementations. Let's see what will happen this time, a comparison of the competition projects of past years and their implementation can be found in a recent article by Yulia Shishalova for the Project Russia magazine.

The heroes of the project are the cones, with which the architects do not offer a specific association - it could be a waffle cone with ice cream, a children's pyramid, a festive cap, or maybe a space rocket nozzle. The largest of the cones, laid on its side, is the ground pavilion, similar to a bone banquet horn. Or maybe not. On the platform, the passengers are waiting for the light-emitting cone-columns set on the tops. The interior has three main colors and textures - white plaster, dark gray paint and light gray granite.

The station's design is based on three components: the surrounding context (vast green areas, the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve), the traditions of the Moscow metro and trends in modern architecture. The platform is presented as a pedestrian boulevard with tree columns. The ceiling is the stylized sky, and the floor is the earth, respectively. It connects a real street boulevard with a "fictional" pavilion, reminiscent of a park green arch. The minimalistic design is realized with practical materials - black and white metal, stainless steel, granite.

The architects propose to get rid of the hustle and bustle with which the metro is usually associated. The station becomes a place where you can slow down, reflect or dream under a starry sky, which is usually inaccessible to Muscovites, as well as residents of other megacities, due to light pollution. Contrasting color combinations allow you to immerse yourself in the space. At the same time, the decor is very restrained so as not to distract from the main thing. In general, the color scheme was selected in combination with the station "Klenovy Boulevard 1".

The vector of the formation of the artistic image of the project is set by the location of the station in a green area not far from Kolomenskoye. It was natural motives that formed the basis of the design - metaphorical trees, fragments of the sky shining through their crowns. And all this in monochrome with a minimum of detail. This is how we managed to get an integral, stylistically consistent modern space. Descending into the metro, passengers seem to remain in the open air and, while waiting for the train, can walk along the boulevard.

Station "Prospect Marshal Zhukov"

First placeArchitectural bureau ASADOV

The military glory of Georgy Zhukov, one of the marshals of the Victory, prompted the architects to choose the Order of the Great Patriotic War as the main image of the project and reflect the heroism and patriotism of Soviet people in the appearance of the station. Among the metaphors used here are stars, obelisks, arrows of military maps (red wedges of pavilions). The solemn decoration of the platform is combined with the tragedy of the dark side walls.

Lighting plays one of the main roles in the project. It is created by reflected light "hidden" behind the column capitals and side cornices. Golden rays form a rhythmic ornament on the ceiling. Finally, the pillars-stars also shine, only with a solemn, ruby light.

In developing the design idea, the architects decided to start from the history of the Khoroshevo-Mnevniki district, where the construction of the station is planned. An unobtrusive connection with the military theme manifests itself in the form of a pattern on the walls and in the street paving, which symbolizes the order strips.

Continuing the traditions of one of the greenest districts of Moscow, the authors build the station's pavilions into the park area, creating a pedestrian boulevard between the Oktyabrsky radio field and the embankment.

Third placeNowadays, Architects of Invention

There is no reference to the war era, as well as to the personality of Georgy Zhukov, but there is a visor on the leg, almost like the project of Zaha Hadid's bureau. Everything is built on the "endless" repetition of the rotation figure. The decoration of the lobby with thin aluminum pipes continues with the columns of the platform and echoes in shape with the pipe of the underground station itself. The color scheme is based on a combination of blue, red and silver, not only in decoration, but also in lighting.

The design of the station is based on the specifics of the context: high-rise residential complexes, dynamic traffic, numerous lights of houses, lanterns and cars - all this creates a festive mood, a sense of an elegant city and, in combination with urban romance, becomes the starting point of the project. The prototype of the red ground pavilions is one of the iconic local objects - the Zhivopisny Bridge over the Moskva River.

The underground part of the station is designed in black and white, and the main stylistic device here is the play of light. The architects aimed to create a solemn yet modern, dynamic interior. The military theme is reflected in the illuminated bas-reliefs of the columns.

Inspired by the surrounding murals, the architects tried to turn the station into a giant art object. The path to the platform lies through the "cloud", which remains above the passengers even while waiting for trains. The interior is decorated in contrasting monochrome colors. Overhead light navigation is unobtrusive and intuitive. The aim was to shape the identity of the place and at the same time create a pleasant atmosphere.
