ABB solutions enable Sochi's main Olympic hotel to qualify for BREEAM certification
The hotel for representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) - Radisson Blu Resort & Congress Hotel, which opened in September 2012, claims to receive an authoritative "green" certificate. One of the solutions that ensured a high level of environmental efficiency was implemented by ABB, a leader in power equipment and technologies for the power and automation industry. It is a system of "smart" lighting control, which saves energy in the building by 30% compared to manual control.
An automatic lighting control system based on the KNX protocol regulates the illumination level in public areas of the hotel, including in the congress center with a total area of 5000 m2, intended for the meetings of the International Olympic Committee during the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The lighting of the congress center was realized with the use of several hundred LED luminaires operating on the digital DALI protocol. ABB offered an innovative solution based on modern DG / S lighting controllers with KNX and DALI interfaces. This approach allowed the installers not only to implement complex algorithms for controlling light scenes, but also to provide remote control from a single dispatching unit for managing the hotel's engineering systems.
“The innovative lighting control system implemented in the hotel for IOC members has a high potential for energy efficiency and guarantees a third lower energy consumption,” says Andrey Oleinik, ABB's project manager. "This will be confirmed by the protection of the BREEAM environmental certificate, which is scheduled for October 2013."
BREEAM is a British method for assessing the environmental performance of buildings, with standards adopted around the world. The assessment is carried out in 10 areas, ranging from management and efficient use of resources, ending with the level of pollution of the surrounding air and water. “In Russia, only seven buildings are BREEAM certified and about 25 properties have applied for it,” said Guy Eames, CEO of the Green Building Council in Russia. - Much depends on the moment at which the initiator of the project decided to certify the building - the sooner, the better. BREEAM is a voluntary certification system based on the assignment of a certain number of points to an object. Some of them can be obtained only at the early stages of the project, for example, those that include measures to protect the environment of the site for the construction of the facility.
“One of the key tasks that was set during the design and construction of the Olympic facilities was the minimum negative impact on the environment,” comments Gleb Vatletsov, Director of the Environmental Support Department of Olympstroy Group. - Increased requirements for environmental friendliness of buildings allowed the hotel for the representatives of the International Olympic Committee to qualify for the successful completion of certification according to the "green" BREEAM standard, which has international recognition. This standard imposes increased requirements for the energy efficiency of the facility, the environmental friendliness of the building materials used, the comfort and safety of people in the building."
The five-star Radisson Blu Resort & Congress Hotel with 508 rooms is the main infrastructure facility of the upcoming Olympic Games, which will become the center of attraction for information about the course of all sports. During the Olympics, the hotel will host more than a hundred dignitaries, including IOC President Count Jacques Rogge, Prince Albert of Monaco and British Princess Anne. The opening of the hotel marked the beginning of the commissioning of a park of 393 infrastructure and sports Olympic facilities.
