The Visitor Center is located in the town of Ribe on the coast of the Danish Wadden Sea zone, a unique tidal ecosystem that also surrounds parts of the Netherlands and Germany. The sea as a whole has the status of a UNESCO monument, and in Denmark - a national park. On the shoals of the Wadden Sea, you can find 10,000 species of plants and animals, and a variety of migratory birds stop there - about 15 million individuals each spring or autumn.
For successful educational work with tourists, the existing building in the park was rebuilt and expanded according to the project of Dorte Mandrup A / S, turning into a visitor center. The architects chose for the construction the traditional material for these places - straw. She covered the roof and part of the facade, and the material was obtained from a field nearby, and therefore was originally saturated with salt from the sea air - as it was in the days of the Vikings. The museum was hoisted on a platform, which was done in the Middle Ages. The four wings of the building create a wind-sheltered courtyard, which is also typical of western Denmark.
To connect the interior with the surroundings, and the exhibition inside the building with the exhibition outside, panoramic windows were used. The building also houses a cafe, educational premises, and an information center.
