The project takes into account the function of the Assen station as a transit station of regional importance, while it was important to minimize the role of railways as a border between urban areas. In addition, according to the De Zwarte Hond masterplan for the "Axis Florain", a scheme for the development of the city and increasing its accessibility, the station should also connect as many modes of transport as possible.
The solution was a building without a front façade, dominated by a triangular wooden roof with a graceful curve that marks the entrance to the 2,600 bike underground garage. It is one of several structures grouped under this roof. Thanks to their independence from it and its free-standing supports, any restructuring and change of their function is possible in the future.
This is the first wooden roof of the station in the Netherlands to completely block the tracks. Its height is 10 meters, sides are 78, 88 and 90 m2, its area is 3000 m2. Openings in it let in sunlight into the station hall and onto the platforms. A green stripe of sedum around the perimeter helps retain rainwater. The pillars and edges of the roof are covered in champagne painted metal.
The walls of the station are faced with bricks of different shades of red, the floors are covered with red stone on the stairs and in the tunnels, and clinker paving stones are used outside the new square. This is how the building is connected with the space of the city - after all, in addition to it, the project includes a new pedestrian crossing under platforms and tracks, a reconstructed and shortened bicycle tunnel, as well as a tunnel for cars.
