The new terminal, which also includes a high-rise building - Transbay Tower, will connect nine bus and rail networks and serve not only the San Francisco Bay Area, but the entire state of California.

Pelly won the architecture competition for the station in the fall of 2007, beating Richard Rogers and SOM in the final. A distinctive feature of the winning option is the City Park park with an area of more than 2 hectares on the roof of the terminal. In addition to the green recreational area that the metropolis needs, it also plays the role of an "eco-filter", absorbing the exhaust gases of buses, collecting and recycling rain and "gray" water, preventing the building from overheating in the heat.

The architect emphasizes the expressiveness of the forms of his building: its facades are made in the form of a stack of trees made of glass and steel, and the undulating curves of the ceilings resemble flower petals. A new square - Mission Square, covered with glass vaults, acts as a "front door" to the terminal. A new skyscraper will be built next to it - the Transbay Tower, which will serve as a landmark for the station in the landscape of San Francisco.

The waiting rooms and aprons of the Transbay Transportation Center will be located one under the other, bus lines - on the ground, rail - underground. Natural lighting in all areas of the terminal will be provided by "light columns" - light wells that permeate all levels of the complex.

The construction of the station will begin in 2010 and will be completed in 2014.
