The project for the EDP includes the construction of a curved staircase and canopy on the banks of the Tagus River. It is intended for holding exhibitions, conferences, film screenings, but the main function will be the "cultural" public space. The construction should revive the embankment, which is still in relative desolation, despite the nearby popular Electricity Museum - a reconstructed power plant of the early 20th century.
Also, the cultural center will draw the attention of tourists to the panoramic views of the Tagus estuary, opening from this point of the embankment, and will become a kind of gateway for the areas of Belem and Ajuda, rich in historical monuments, located nearby.
The structure imitates landforms and is maximally inscribed in context: the steps descending to the water will hide under the water at high tide, and the waves will cast reflections on the floors. The center will become a comfortable and pleasant place where townspeople and tourists can relax in the shade even on a hot afternoon.
The project budget is 19 million euros, it will be implemented in 2013.
