The complex was erected on the territory of a former industrial zone on the banks of the Huangpu River. An irregularly shaped artificial lake was dug there, and a stadium, indoor and outdoor pools are located practically on its surface. In addition, the ensemble includes a multi-storey media center.
All sports facilities are built on a reinforced concrete frame, while the floors are made of steel with aluminum panels. These panels, painted white, imitate the sails of ships; streamlined structures with a repeating motif of arches also remind of the theme of water.
The round stadium is intended, among other things, for synchronized swimming competitions, but after the World Cup it will be possible to hold concerts, boxing, hockey, badminton competitions there (all facilities of the sports center can be used not only for swimming). Its capacity is 14 thousand people, if necessary, the number of spectator seats can be increased to 18 thousand. The span of the stadium overlap is 170 m.
The indoor pool has a rectangular plan, to emphasize this, the adjacent lake shore is also straightened. There are 4 swimming pools inside, including one "leisure" one. The dimensions of the structure's overlap are 120 x 210 m, the capacity is 3500 (5000) spectators.
The outdoor diving pool is circular; its stands (2,000 or 5,000 seats) are covered with a membrane resting on an arcade.
In addition, the complex includes a media center - an 80-meter tower (15 floors) with facades sheathed in white perforated aluminum panels. Its floor plans are based on a grid with a module of 8.4 m, which makes it easy to change the purpose of the building depending on the current needs. Now, in addition to the rooms for journalists, there is a fitness center, a medical block, conference rooms and a VIP zone.
