New Grenegade or as it is also called "green street" is located in the third largest city in Denmark, Odense. This place is famous for its central square, which playfully attracts pedestrians and cyclists and gives them the opportunity to come up with spontaneous or inherent images that convey a certain mood. Copenhagen-based design bureau MASU Planning used an interactive concept and dynamic forms to create this original place and imbue it with an attractive force that extends far beyond the borders of Denmark. The main idea is to use Hagemeister's undulating cobblestones in the Odense variety, which resemble the waves of the sea. The organic shapes of the oak wood benches, the extensive water features and images that a passer-by can choose interactively complement this picture in the best possible way. Harmony of opposites Finding himself in a spacious urban space between the prestigious Brandt gallery on the one hand and the old part of Odense with its cozy cafes and small shops on the other, a casual passer-by will inevitably pay attention to the dynamic design of this unique place. And it is unlikely that he will go straight across this 5500 square meters area. The temptation is too great to repeat the steps of the undulating paving motif or sit on the bench.
The clinker Hagemeister of the Odense sort with dune-like tan marks is an impressive stage for performances of water, light and benches. The Hagemeister clinker factory specially created the sand-colored Odense variety in the nineties., to renovate large areas of the central part of Odense … This light variety with pleasant optics, which is lined with numerous squares, pedestrian paths and curbs, is in perfect harmony with the traditional architecture of the city. This materialized constancy creates a cohesive image with identity, which, upon closer examination, also strikes with individual characteristics and peculiar character. In the magical square of Neuen Grønnegade, undulating paving harmoniously combines two opposites: the dynamic waveform and the angularity of the clinker. The Hagemeister factory has developed a special long and narrow format (240 x 71 x 71 mm) without bevel, so that the massive clinker in the paving will follow curves that change and collide with each other. At the same time, this format helps to avoid wide seams, which would restrict traffic or disrupt a harmonious styling image. Laying with the "versetzter Stapelverband" method seems to effortlessly form the undulating movements conceived by the planning office MASU Planning. Due to its outstanding stability, this clinker format can withstand the loads of machines that cross the square at its outermost section.
Particularly attractive is the interactive design of the play of light and water at nightfall, which passers-by can choose themselves by sending an SMS. They have a choice of seven different scenarios, from tango and fairy tales to natural motives. In accordance with the light, the lighting of the street also changes, passing from soft to cold light. If several passers-by choose different motives at the same time, then a special program guarantees the fulfillment of everyone's wishes, dividing their motives in time. The condition for the implementation of such a design of the square was that all parking vehicles were moved to an underground garage under the square. There are also rooms with equipment for light and water games.
