The submarine workshop was built in Hanover at the end of the Second World War and therefore was never used in full force in its "profile". Today, this facility accommodates all kinds of shops and outlets. Among its largest tenants are furniture factories RS and Yellow, with which Bolles + Wilson has collaborated not for the first time. In particular, it was this bureau that built the headquarters of RS and Yellow, as well as the flagship store in Münster.
In the workshop, these furniture manufacturers rent part of the ground floor space. The architects were tasked with delimiting the zones of the showroom and the warehouse, where buyers can pick up the purchased furnishings; it also required the creation of separate "clusters" to display furniture and related household goods.
All the necessary demonstration and storage facilities Bolles + Wilson organically fit between the preserved workshop structures - metal supports and crane racks, which have long been covered with rust. The new partitions are painted white, the stairs are covered with natural wood. Such a neutral palette not only serves as an ideal backdrop for the furniture sold, but, in contrast to the original designs of the workshop, emphasizes the brutal character of the latter. According to the architects, the scale of these elements is the best suited for exhibiting furniture, since it levels out its dimensions: against the background of such a massive metal frame, you can place as many home interior items as you like - anyway, there will not be a feeling of clutter.
