Last March, the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi screening was hosted by local enthusiasts and British film actress Tilda Swinton. The venue, as the name suggests, was the island of Ko Yao Noi, but for the film screenings of the final day of the festival, the guests were transported by boats to the neighboring island of Ko Kudu Noi.
There, in the middle of a lagoon surrounded by rocks, a floating cinema was installed. The session took place in the open air, in the complete darkness of a tropical night. This, according to the plan of the former colleague of Koolhaas Ole Sheren, returned the viewer to the basis of cinema: the combination of light and sound in a dark space.
The movie theater is built on the principle of local floating lobster farms: a wooden frame connected by rubber mounts to pieces of foam wrapped in a mosquito net. The best quality materials have been used for the Archipelago Cinema, however, when completed, it will be left to the local community as a stage or playground on the water. Its design is modular, which makes it easy to adapt the structure to new needs.
