Recall that the competition for the best architectural design of a student dormitory was announced in February 2011, and exactly a year later, an exhibition of works by 20 finalists took place in the foyer of the Union of Architects of Russia. Each of them could choose one of three sites - in Kaliningrad, Volgograd or Yekaterinburg - and design a hostel on it for 400, 600, 800, 1000 or 1500 places. The authors could also include in their projects the possibility of transformation - "Ginsburg Architects", for example, did just that (the capacity of the dormitory they proposed is determined by its layout of standard blocks), which, together with a memorable architectural and planning solution, ensured this bureau a victory in the competition …
Ginsburg Architects also won the Best Architectural Design for a Student Dormitory with a Capacity of Up to 1500 Places. Here, the bureau has also developed two different layout options for the main volumes: one was named "Tower" and is a fifteen-story building with two symmetrical wings located at an angle of 90 degrees, the second is a "Campus" consisting of two five-story L-shaped buildings forming a square with a courtyard in the plan. The laconicism of the volumes is compensated for with the help of a bright palette of facades, and in the places of their joints the architects have placed public multifunctional spaces "allowing to realize various scenarios of students' social life."
The winner of the award in the nomination "The best architectural project of a student dormitory with a capacity of up to 400 places" was the architectural bureau "Bogachkin and Bogachkin" (Moscow). The architects Vyacheslav and Nikita Bogachkin also based their project on the universal principle of layout - they combine residential buildings of two types (for 300-400 and 500-600 places) with various infrastructure objects, achieving not only the diversity and picturesqueness of the general plan of the complex, but also its exact compliance with the characteristics and needs of a particular educational institution.
The jury recognized SibProekt (Irkutsk) as the author of the Best Architectural Project for a Student Dormitory with a Capacity of Up to 600 Places. The concept developed by this institute is based on the idea of environmental friendliness and maximum preservation of existing green spaces, as well as the use of alternative energy sources, including solar panels. The jury also named the strong point of the project a large number of layout options for the residential units themselves.
The best project in the nomination "Student hostel with a capacity of up to 800 places", according to the jury, was presented by LLC "RK Project" (Izhevsk). The hostel itself consists of two wide eight-storey residential buildings, united by a public block, but the main merit of the architects is not even that they came up with buildings that are comfortable for life. The authors of the project corrected the proposed concept for the development of the campus - they moved a group of public buildings to the southeastern part of the site, thereby freeing up space for landscaped courtyards and dividing the public and residential areas by passage.
And, finally, “The best architectural project of a student dormitory with a capacity of up to 1000 places” was developed by the Moscow office “Arch Project-2”. The architects based their work on the principle of New Project Realism, which they themselves define as "creating a balance between the comfort of living for the" high-tech "youth of the 21st century and the flexibility of the functional content of the hostel complex." This can be achieved by using minimal structural modules, from which the authors put together a variety of compositions.
The solemn ceremony of awarding the winners of the competition for the best architectural design of a student dormitory will take place within the framework of the Week of Architecture and Construction of the exhibition "MOSBUILD-2012", which will be held in Moscow from 10 to 13 April.
