The structure, somewhat reminiscent of the Porsche Museum of the same architects, is located in the former Overhook industrial area. Now it is being transformed into a modern mixed development area on the banks of the Ei River.

The museum is built right next to the water, and offers spectacular views from its open terrace and from the lobby with panoramic windows. The white facades are a reference to the white screen of the cinema, and the complex shape is an allusion to the “multiple points of view” that define cinema art.

EYE was founded in 2010 through the merger of several film institutions, and the museum was just one of them. Therefore, its purpose is not limited to the museum function: there are studios and a laboratory in the new building, and it is planned to build another building nearby for restoration and research work. A film library will also be opened there.

The Netherlands Film Institute is the first cultural institution to cross the Hey to Overhoek from the historic center of Amsterdam. Others are planned to follow. Both parts of the city are connected by a round-the-clock ferry, which is especially convenient for movie lovers: EYE is open from 10 am until late at night.
