The location for the new building is determined by the history of the city: in this place at the beginning of our era there were Roman baths, and their remains, in particular, a warm floor (hypocaust), were included in the permanent exhibition. He can be seen in the main hall at the entrance to the museum.
Chichester was one of the first settlements founded by the Romans after the conquest of Britain in 43 AD. In the city called Noviomag Regnov, many remains of ancient buildings have survived, while a significant part of the 300 thousand archaeological finds stored in the museum belongs to the Roman period.
Novium is located exactly on the border of the historic center and the area of new development, so its light facades made of artificial stone are a reference to the limestone of the Cathedral and other medieval buildings of Chichester, and its strict laconic forms are a tribute to the modern era.
In addition to the halls on the first floor, the museum houses two more tiers of exhibition spaces, as well as storerooms, research and restoration laboratories, an educational center and administrative premises. The collection of the museum consists mainly of geological and historical exhibits.
