The results of the competition for the development of the concept of the facades of the new museum complex of the State Tretyakov Gallery were announced today in the large hall of the Moscow Architectural Council. The winner is the project developed by the SPEECH architectural studio under the leadership of Sergei Tchoban. The jury awarded the second place to the project of the architectural bureau "Totement / Paper". The third place was taken by the concept of Vladimir Plotkin and Elena Kuznetsova, TPO "Reserve".
In total, six teams took part in the closed competition announced at the end of May. The three leaders did not include the projects of JSB Tsimailo, Lyashenko and Partners, UNK Project and JSB Ostozhenka.
The terms for development were very tight (in fact, a month; the competition was started at the end of May), and the task for the participants was more than difficult - while maintaining all the main parameters of the existing project, to rework the imaginative solution of the building. The peculiarity of the museum is that it arose on the basis of Pavel Tretyakov's private house (where at first his collection was kept), not adapted for museum use, and then it was constantly rebuilt and expanded. The last, in the 1980s, in Lavrushinskoye was built the Engineering Building of the State Tretyakov Gallery (see the stages of development of the State Tretyakov Gallery). Now, with the construction of a new building, a large-scale one, conceived back in the 1930s, should be completed. a project for the formation of a large museum quarter.
The project of the new building of the museum complex of the Tretyakov Gallery was developed more than six years ago by the organizations Zarubezhproekt and Mosproekt-4, headed by Andrey Bokov. Explaining the very fact of holding such a not quite standard competition aimed at finding a figurative solution, the general director of the gallery, Irina Lebedeva, noted that the organizers wanted, first of all, to understand in which direction the project should develop - either this is a clear adherence to traditions and history, or a completely new architecture of the XXI century, or some kind of modern stylization. The competition was supposed to attract the attention of both professionals and the public to this truly significant project, and suggest the correct course of development.
As a result, in the course of heated debates, about which the chief architect of the city and the jury, which included members of the architectural council, as well as representatives of the customer, spoke at a press conference, a rather compromise option was chosen as a priority. Sergey Kuznetsov called the main advantages of the winning project a respectful attitude to the context and at the same time its freshness and modernity: “There is no doubt that this is a building of our time, the project is not trying to mimic the historical environment, but at the same time it is recognizable as part of the gallery - and by the materials, both in color and in the nature of the architecture. In addition, this is the only work that meets all the requirements of the technical specifications of the competition as much as possible."
Andrey Bokov noted the similarity of the solution proposed by Sergei Tchoban with his own version. This, according to Bokov, should facilitate further work on the project, and in addition, such a coincidence indicates the correctness of the solution found. Hans Stimmann, one of the judging representatives, advised Andrei Bokov and Sergei Tchoban to continue working on the project together, since the new building should become the face of the Tretyakov Gallery, to emphasize the importance of the museum in the global context. This proposal was also supported by Irina Lebedeva.
All the concepts presented for the competition were quite contrasting. Some projects offered bold and radical solutions, while others, on the contrary, were completely ascetic. All this, coupled with the keenest interest in the works and their active discussion, according to Sergei Kuznetsov, testifies to the high bar set by the participants and the quality of the competition as a whole.
Also, in a separate category, student works on a given topic were considered. The chief architect of the city promised to continue attracting students to work on iconic projects with the opportunity to receive an assessment from a professional jury.
