Six teams participated in the second round of the contest. Prize places were taken by: the winner of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, TPO "Reserve" (2nd place) and MVRDV (3rd place), which was announced yesterday (see the message about this and a more detailed story about the projects of the finalists). Now we publish projects of three consortia that did not make it to the final.
Two of these teams are entirely foreign. The architects of the British bureau Gustafson Porter, specializing in landscape architecture (their most famous work is the Westergasfabriek park in Amsterdam), proposed a calm English park with a minimum of paths, a large pond and an outdoor swimming pool. The two main alleys intersect in a cruciform manner. The Chinese Turenscape has also placed a large round pond in the park, as well as vast swamps and a birch forest (the winners of the competition are not alone in their passion for the theme of swamps). But the main highlight of the Chinese project was overhead passages, concentrated closer to the embankment in a birch forest. Two crossings lead over the embankment route to the pier at the Moskva River, one to the Moskvoretsky bridge.
The team, consisting of the Dutch West 8 and the Russian bureau of Boris Bernasconi, boldly planted trees along the road along the embankment, making one of the main ideas of the project "the return of the natural descent to the river." The architects also suggested treating a part of the park next to the churches on Varvarka as urban, imitating the contours of the building there with the help of one-story tourist pavilions. From architecture in their park - a line of a colonnade along Vasilyevsky descent and a radical glass bagel in the center of the park, and from plant wonders, the consortium decided to please Muscovites with a greenhouse with Black Sea plants, rightly judging that resort dreams are dearer to the Russian heart than native swamps.
We publish projects with author's descriptions and remind that the customer of the competition is OJSC "Russia", the organizer is the Research and Development Institute of the General Plan of Moscow, and the consultant is the Institute of Media, Architecture and Design "Strelka", which developed the terms of reference and the functional model of the park.
Gustafson porter
“The main entrances to the park are organized at the corners of the site and are connected by diagonal alleys that organize the transit of pedestrians through the park. Each entrance has a unique design. Key areas of the park surround the Big Chalice valley. The Gardens of the Historic Terrace form a balcony to the north of the park, while the garden along the stream and the Courtyard of Cultures encircle the shape of the Great Bowl landscape on the north side. There is a lake in the center of this valley, which serves as a natural drainage function in the park valley.
The objects of the park are part of its landscape. They are divided into two groups: located at the Big Bowl in the western part of the park and under the Historical Terrace in its northern part. The only exceptions are the pavilion-restaurant, deliberately located to the side and clearly connected with the general topography of the park and the Historical Terrace, as well as an outdoor swimming pool, and the Neglinka cafe in the landscape part, on the northern shore of the lake. In addition, two small pavilions are envisaged: on the Historical Terrace at the Information Wall and on the southern shore of the lake, next to the forest playground for children."
Turenscape
“The park project from the team of the Chinese company Turenscape is an ecosystem that supports natural biodiversity.
This is a modern landscape based on an understanding of environmental ethics: achieving a good result with low maintenance costs. The idea, called "Blue Circle", is based on 4 basic principles. Turning to the traces of the past hidden in the ground and turning them into a system of terrestrial objects. The concept of "designed nature", which includes 4 landscape zones: monastery gardens, meadow, water surface, swamp and birch forest.
Creation of an observation pathway and a cableway that will allow visitors to the park to experience "designed nature", along with a viewing terrace where the traditional plants of the pharmaceutical gardens grow.
This is the place from where the best panoramic views of the historical sights of Moscow open up. It is an important component connecting city blocks with the Moskva River embankment.
Zaryadye Park is a new urban ecosystem that offers a range of environmental benefits. The Blue Circle is a new landmark in Moscow, which allows you to recreate the “memory” of the place, which will become a platform for perceiving the historical past of the city, which will give a new vision of the ecological future of the nation and will be available to all segments of the population."
West 8 + Bernaskoni
“The team of west8 (Netherlands) and bernaskoni (Russia) identified a number of key tasks that their project is designed to solve.
The first task is to return the natural descent to the Moskva River. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to see and feel the original relief of the place, revealing the history of the connection of the ancient city and the Moskva River.
The next task is to create a single green space between the eastern walls of the Kremlin, St. Basil's Cathedral and Red Square. Next to such a neighborhood, the park remains sedate and majestic. As a result, the idea was born to create a composition of green spaces with a colonnade at the entrance to the park. Visitors, passing through the stylized gates, will become part of the amazing interior, executed in gold and red colors, using mosaic technique. The decoration of the colonnade could reflect various themes from the history of Russian art.
In their project, the participants are trying to revive the old urban environment around the Varvarka churches, separating their territory with one-story buildings oriented towards the park. It houses an information pavilion, food and trade facilities. In addition to these objects, it is planned to create a greenhouse in the park, which will house tubs with palms and other southern plants, referring to the atmosphere of the Black Sea coast. The greenhouse allows the park to remain a green oasis throughout the year.
The participants are sure that in the future the streets surrounding Zaryadye will be transformed into a new district with boutique hotels and restaurants, and the park itself will become a kind of center of attraction, a meeting place from which residents and guests of the capital can begin their walks around Moscow."
