This release will also be remembered for the strange circumstance when a satisfactory process preceded an excellent result. It was both psychologically and methodically difficult to work with students remotely. The further, the harder, and the peak, of course, fell on the defense, when, after the announcement of the assessments, we exchanged congratulations at the votsap instead of drinking champagne with graduates near the university.

I must say that our students in this difficult, nervous and often unpredictable period showed extraordinary efficiency and miracles of self-organization. And it is very joyful that, having shown themselves to be serious and mature specialists, they brought all their so different and somewhere very personal ideas to a brilliant finale!

Park of impressions / Victoria Eremeeva

The park of impressions on Tuchkov Buyan is a place where a person encounters himself, is filled with emotions and finds inner peace. There are objects here that help slow down: for example, a pit of silence in the very center of the city. There are unusual visual solutions designed to surprise the visitor: for example, in the Gallery of Changing Pictures, the "exhibits" are openings in the walls and nature itself, which is visible through them. The slab of the foundation, left over from the previous pillar, turns into a landscape object called the "aroma pit": it is formed by chamber spaces, brightly smelling plants and the absence of wind. Objects of impressions focus on unusual angles of familiar things. The path through the park turns into an exciting adventure.

Victoria's Park of Impressions is not just an architectural project, but also a bright idea centered on the emotions of the visitor. The framework for the organization of spaces is visual, auditory and olfactory experiences: the direction of the change of closed and open spaces, unexpected viewpoints, the contrast of noisy places and places of silence, fragrant gardens - all this turns an ordinary park into an Impression Park.

Green Island / Darina Mulyukova and Anastasia Ryazapova

Tuchkov Buyan must take the form of a new public space, where nature and architecture form a laconic ensemble, parts of which cannot exist separately. Historical panoramas are revealed from this place; it is part of a walking route and connects several districts of the city. The new park should become a “familiar place” where people will feel like they are in their home environment. The program of the territory implies a variety of routes of movement and spaces of different moods: ground, underground, embankment.

One of the significant and high-profile events in the architectural world of St. Petersburg in 2020 was the decision to build a new city park on the site where Vatny Island once was, near the historic Tuchkov Buyan. The proposal to take this topic, despite the complexity of the task, was received by Darina and Nastya with great enthusiasm.

After conducting an in-depth analysis of the history of the place and the peculiarities of the context, the students directed many scenarios for the pastime of visitors: they divided the park into three types of spaces (ground, underground and waterfront space), in order to reconnect them later at special climax points. By adding a careful and attentive attitude to detail, we have received a bright, varied and eventful park. Exactly what a park should be in the center of a metropolis.

ARTGOROD / Julia Melnikova and Anna Efimova

ARTGOROD is a project to revitalize the former Krasnoye Znamya hosiery factory into a creative cluster. Its anchor function is art residences in which representatives of contemporary art live. In the process, artists interact with visitors in workshops, lecture halls, offices and exhibition spaces.

Particular emphasis is placed on the adaptability of the spaces to different formats of events. The building of the former TPP is being transformed into the Tsentralnaya station - all the main events related to the work of residents take place here. The main spaces are the large and small event halls. A suspended volume is integrated into the interior of the large event hall - a restaurant, the external structure of which consists of reflective plates. By reflecting the illuminated truss rods and the surrounding reality, the plates create anamorphosis images that change with space. Thus, the volume affects the exhibition space, and is itself a part of it.

All design solutions meet modern principles of urban development: mixed use strategies, stimulating contacts, renovation instead of new construction, connectivity and permeability of spaces.

Few can clearly explain what the phrase "creative cluster" really means, meanwhile it has already managed to set the teeth on edge. What needs to be done so that the next “space for creative activity” does not become a copy of many others like it and, most importantly, can work for a long time and successfully?

Anna and Yulia decided to start with routine work: they studied more than a dozen so-called creative clusters in St. Petersburg and beyond, after which they formulated a clear program: what, where, why and how it will be located and function. And they came up with the name "ARTGOROD", which reflects the concentration of various kinds of activities and interactions within the cluster. Then it was a matter of technology, the authors did an excellent job with this, disassembling their program to individual architectural and landscape details. We would venture to suggest that the analytical work in conjunction with the formulation of the program took them more time than specific design decisions. But “it's better to lose a day, but then fly in five minutes”!

Gastrobar and brewery in Pushkin / Polina Abramova

Polina in her work proposes to adapt the ruins of the former Manege of the Tsarskoye Selo garrison in Pushkin for a gastrobar and a brewery - an atmospheric place that can compete with the rest of the city's catering establishments: in the adjacent territory, you can do everything that is prohibited in historical parks. The project provides for new construction with the inclusion of historical structures in the planning structure, adapted as zoning screens for both interior and exterior space. The concept of careful shaping of the new building implies the perception of cultural heritage as the main feature in the appearance of the building.

The work took the third place in the intra-university competition of final qualifying works.

Leaders comment:

The Sofia district, although it is located next to the park ensemble of Tsarskoye Selo, is actually cut off by the park from the historical center of Pushkin, and in a sense is a military town: garrisons were located here, and today many military men, active and former, inhabit it. The ruins of the Garrison Manege are located in the central part of the district near the St. Sophia Cathedral. Based on these circumstances, it was necessary to solve two problems:

  1. What function is suitable for a place remote from the main tourist routes, designed for a local user, while also necessary for tourists who sometimes wander here?
  2. How to use ruins in the context of this function?

In our opinion, Polina found a brilliant solution that can be described in several theses:

  • combining the culture of consumption and recreation with the production cycle;
  • the double role of the ruins: the inner facade from the side of the streets and the curtain of the courtyard
  • an extremely laconic object as a whole, which forms the street front in fact with its interior;
  • an intelligible environmental and landscape program, which is absolutely essential for the main function.

The culture of consumption in the service of historical values is an excellent and quite feasible method for small towns.

Creative port. The concept of development of Nizhegorodskaya Strelka / Yulia Terekhina

Strelka has always played an important role in the city, its territory, among other things, successfully functioned as a port. The goal of the project is to formulate the principles of the port in the modern world, where information and new ideas have become more valuable than cargo and goods. The new port provides flexible spaces for an inspiring experience. The project provides opportunities for completely different areas of activity and is aimed at creating new contacts. The appearance of a new port is equivalent to the appearance of the Moon in the sky, since the Moon reflects the light of the Sun. The port reflects in a new way the best aspects of each period of history. Open port is open for people, ideas and changes!

Leaders comment:

Nizhegorodskaya Strelka has long been heard by architects and urbanists. It is not surprising, because this place has undergone many changes over a hundred years, going from an all-Russian fair to a wasteland with concrete banks.

Julia's concept absorbed all the stages of Strelka's life, which the author cleverly linked with the day cycle, from dawn to dusk, and formulated a multi-level program for today, calling it the "phase of the moon" - at night, after (and thanks to) which the dawn should come again!

The name Open Port easily combines respect for the port history of Strelka and the post-industrial format of human activities and interactions that are so necessary for the modern urban public space. The program of the project actually inherits the typical elements of the city river port, translating them into a new language and creating from them a huge number of all kinds of functions and objects that essentially form an urban linear park on the embankment. Regarding the language, it is worth noting one more thing: the author's speech at the defense was a speech by an alien representing a working group from the Moon, kindly offering his views and help to solve our completely earthly problems. You can understand the entire scope of the work done with the help of the new Arrow created by Yulia.

The case when irrepressible fantasy, coupled with an analytical mind and disarming graphics, make a conceptual and ideological manifesto out of a bachelor's project.
