Developer Gladedale is developing a large plot of land near the historic Hampton Court complex (now a museum), and plans to build a hotel there as part of new construction. The original architects were Eliza & Morrison, who proposed a low-key structure, generally reminiscent of a traditional country pub or hotel, but without specific historical elements.
The project was opposed by both public activists, concerned about active construction activities in the immediate vicinity of the most important monument of English architecture, and government organizations English Heritage and CABE (Commission on Architecture and Built Environment).
Developers turned to one of the main British apologists of neoclassicism, Quinlan Terry, with a request to develop an alternative project. Designed in Georgian style forms, this option fully satisfied English Heritage, but CABE and the Hampton Court Rescue Campaign are still unhappy with the construction activity in the protected area of the monument.
Gladedale management has made no secret of its commitment to the project by Eliza & Morrison Architects, who also developed the master plan for the entire site. But due to the current situation, they have transferred the right to choose from two style options to the local city council, which is to announce its decision in October.
