The structure is named "Dragonfly", as the main part of its construction is based on the wing structure of a dragonfly of the Odonata Anisoptera family. The site for its hypothetical construction is Roosevelt Island on the East River, between Manhattan and Queens.
Its height is 600 m (with antennas - 700 m), or 132 floors. In its outlines, the building resembles a yacht with a triangular sail, in the role of which is a "wing" made of glass and a metal frame: inside it there are 28 "fields" for planting various crops, as well as livestock farms. In addition to producing food for the townspeople, these lands will also act as a filter for rainwater and domestic wastewater.
In the role of the "mast" of the complex - two towers with offices and apartments. Also, there will be a double contour that envelopes the wing-sail along the perimeter. A large percentage of Dragonfly's vertical surfaces will be covered by solar panels; they will also be installed on two wide sheds covering the base of the building: on one side, under them, they will arrange a pier for water taxis, on the other - a food market. Also at its foot, in the water, it is planned to create plantations of algae, molluscs, etc.
To make the structure completely self-sufficient in terms of energy, Calbeau proposes installing wind turbines on it, catching the winds of the prevailing directions in New York.
The architect developed his conceptual project in order to draw public attention to the problem of urban growth and the unhealthy principles of their functioning: now they get all the energy and food from the countryside, giving back a variety of waste. Taking into account the constant growth of the urban population, it is in the interests of mankind to switch to an autonomous life support system for megacities.
