The AIA Gold Medal went to Peter Bohlin, bureau chief at Bolin Sivinski Jackson, best known for designing Apple stores in New York, Tokyo, London, Paris and other cities around the world. Although these buildings clearly characterize Bolin's style - in particular, his ability to work with glazing, combine structures in modern architectural forms with historical buildings or fit them into the prevailing context of urban development - they are far from exhausting his work.
For example, for the US National Park Service, from natural materials, in an aesthetics close to traditional rural dwellings, Bolin erected the Pocono Education Center (2005), and many of his residential buildings also belong to this line. The Liberty Bell Memorial Center (2006) in Philadelphia, on the other hand, belongs to the "industrial" trend. Also, the architect successfully works on a large scale, an example of this is the Seattle City Hall complex (2003).
Pew + Scarpa has been named Best Architectural Firm of 2010, an award similar to the firm's Gold Medal and recognizing excellence in architectural practice for at least 10 years. The jury especially emphasized the architects' close attention to social and environmental issues, which was clearly manifested in their mostly residential buildings.
