This summer, for the 16th time, works of architects and designers from all over Europe are taking part in the selection procedures, and this year 5 (!) Works from Russia are participating in the Competition. By selectively publishing the projects of the participants, we in no way give preference to any particular project, but only strive to show the variety of architectural and design solutions. An exception was made only for Russian works, each of which will be covered in current publications. In addition to the selection of the Winner of the Competition by the Jury, the resource www.copperconcept.org organized a "popular vote" on its website, where everyone can vote for the work they like from among those who reached the final of the Competition, and the winner, based on the results of such voting, will be announced at the main solemn award ceremony on November 4, 2013 at the BATIMAT exhibition in Paris.
Radiotherapy Center in Hof (Germany), Hiendl Schineis Architekten
Cubic in shape, this building is free from traditional constraints and flirts with the flowing lines of the façade sections. Separate "bunches" of trees are planted around the building, sometimes casting a shadow, which only emphasizes the vertical nature of the design solution. The façade itself is divided into non-parallel sections that continue to interact vividly with the surrounding trees.
The material used to create the curtain walls is classic unpainted and unoxidized copper, which will surely age over time. The change in each season is reflected in small but cumulative changes in the color of the metal, from glowing bright copper to warm reddish brown, from shiny to matte.
Shimmering green glass scatters light, and at night it spreads light from inside to outside, breathing life into the building in the dark. The facade is made of hinged copper panels using a specially developed fastening system based on the principle of adhesion.
Simple cubic shapes and by no means typical for copper facade solutions, clear, verified, although not perpendicular, lines, an impeccably flat surface with high reflectivity, which will eventually become matte - such impressive simplicity is, of course, the highlight and dignity of this building.
Aerobatics car service, Moscow, from IND Architects and KrovExpo - Russian project of the Competition
In 2011, the unique Euro-Motors car service center acquired a new look in Moscow's Magistralny Lane. The uniqueness of this project lies in everything, from the idea of a business to the implementation of the project itself. Until now, there were no such objects with the use of perforated copper panels in Russia. This object became a kind of firstborn.
Architect Pavel Khegai from the bureau IND Architects explains the concept of the project as follows: “Euro-Motors asked us to create a new look for an automotive technical center, expressing the main qualities of the company's brand: manufacturability, reliability, high level of service. The building is located on a fairly busy highway, and this fact became the starting point for the development of the architectural concept. The dynamics of the flow of cars, the light of their headlights, the metallic sheen of the bodies - these images are projected onto the facade of the technical center. The volume of the building was made rather succinctly, since the town-planning regulations made it possible to develop it only along the street, thereby emphasizing the horizontal movement.
The main properties of the concept were manifested by the cladding of the building with perforated copper panels. This technique has enriched the appearance of the building: as you move along it, the effect of a changing facade appears. During the day, thanks to perforation, light and shadow are superimposed inside the panels, which gives a sense of depth to the facade. At night, the dynamic effect is enhanced by the reflections of the car headlights, as well as by the lights behind and shining through the panels. The luminaires have a horizontal pattern that repeats the nature of the glare of light.
Copper with a bronze tint was chosen as the material of the panels. This reliable and noble metal obliged to emphasize the high status of the owner and the level of service, which is focused on servicing high-class cars."
Andrey Kulagin from the contractor company Pacific Stroy (KrovExpo ™ trademark) says: “The start of work was scheduled for mid-September 2011. In November of the same year, the façade was completed and delivered to the owner of the building. Working with natural materials always makes you feel special responsibility for the quality of workmanship and inspires. There were no particular difficulties during the work. On the contrary, working with such an architectural solution and material aroused interest and inspiration. Particular attention was paid to the entrance group and the perimeter of the façade. An additional sophistication was given to the facade by interior lighting, which opened up a completely different look of the building in the dark, and the light from the lights of passing cars was projected onto the copper with various enchanting effects."
