This is a 2 km2 plot in Hongkou District, located on the Huangpu River, opposite the famous Pudong Skyscraper District. It is located to the north of the historic Bund embankment, and from it got its preliminary name (the project itself as a whole is also quite preliminary, as it was developed for a competition of ideas).
The architects propose to create on this site a zone of dense, environmentally friendly development, combined with a system of small open spaces intended for citizens. It is planned to reduce traffic flows there through the widespread use of public transport, as well as to actively reconstruct existing structures.
The central section of the North Band district, that is, the "North Band", will include 70 hectares of commercial buildings, mainly offices and warehouses. The two skyscrapers in the eastern and western parts will be connected by a pedestrian zone surrounded by 4-storey “podiums” of office and residential towers, where shops, cafes and leisure facilities will be located. Two metro stations will be built to the east and west, which will also serve as entrances to spacious underground shopping centers and international ferry terminals.
In the outer zone with an area of 1.3 km2, the existing buildings will be preserved as much as possible, complemented by new structures.
