This fantastic project, called Public Sky, was created for the SCL-2110 program, timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Chilean statehood, celebrated this year.
The installation was proposed to be installed opposite the presidential palace of La Moneda, next to the Citizens' Square and the beginning of the important urban axis - Paseo Bulnes. Now this is an underdeveloped public space, and the construction of American architects can make it more attractive and convenient, as well as connect it with the idea of Chilean democracy and important events in the country's political history that took place in this very place.
At first glance, Public Sky is a 4,600 m2 translucent slab supported by many pillars. In fact, it consists of 128 "pillows" filled with helium and tied to the ground by 6-meter cables. Attached to the end of each is a water-filled ballast that can be used for sitting and lying by townspeople. These weights can be moved, turning into spectator seats for planned and impromptu performances and performances, and you can also simply relax on them.
The democratic idea of "anti-monument" is embodied by the lightness and ephemerality of Public Sky: on windy days it will sway from the air currents, in calm weather - from the movement of people moving ballasts and touching the cables.
