The main objective of the competition, conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation, was the search for architectural projects of schools and kindergartens, both budgetary and functional, which are planned to be implemented in the coming years within the framework of state programs for housing and social construction. We are talking about typical pre-fabricated objects that meet modern environmental standards and have a striking architectural solution. It is no secret that until now, if it was possible to combine these qualities in the school design, it was only in the case of atypical objects. Now, as the President of the NOP Mikhail Posokhin said at the round table, “the time has come to rethink the previous decisions technically and creatively”. It was for this purpose that the competition was held.
In total, 62 works were sent to it. The projects competed in several nominations, depending on the size and capacity of the projected objects: kindergartens varied from 25 to 250 places, schools - from 100 to 1236. In parallel, a competition was also held for already implemented projects intended for reuse. Of course, typical construction is always quite limited in artistic means, so the objects were evaluated not only and not so much from the point of view of architecture, but, first of all, for their layout, which the participants of the competition tried to make as flexible and roomy as possible.
To the credit of all the participants of the competition, the budget modesty stipulated by the TK did not affect the appearance of the objects: in order to get away from typical "boxes", some architects actively use color and intricate geometry, others fill the traditional typology of village houses of culture with columns with new content. For some reason, the designers of kindergartens distinguished themselves with particular conservatism - educational institutions for the smallest in almost all cases are designed as classic mansions or even castles. For example, in the project of V. V. Gorlov's garden looks like a palace with rustic and projections, and in a more modest version of the architect V. M. Umyvakina is like a 2-storey cottage. And the Petersburg architect E. V. Perov, who received 3 prizes at once, uses columns and turrets in the image of gardens.
But the projects of school buildings for the most part refer either to the language of modern architecture, or to the heritage of the architects of the Russian avant-garde. For example, the kindergarten of Yu. P. Lutchenko's plan resembles the "hammer and sickle" of the famous Samara kitchen factory, and the school of the architect N. V. Korenkova presents a modular constructor, folded in the shape of the famous "comb" of K. Melnikov. By the way, the resulting chain of blocks not only allows you to "dissolve" functions in different rooms, but also forms numerous comfortable courtyards.
Elements of experimental objects of the 1920s are also found in the architectural solutions of schools of the new generation: for example, in the form of an interesting facade-accordion school in the project of V. N. Nikiforov, or a long open gallery-canopy of the school of architect A. V. Samorodnitsky. Participants of the competition no less often refer to the experience of deconstructivists, using collages of bright colored planes, and some prefer something completely atypical and as if from a completely different typology, such as the project of the school of the Astrakhan architect D. Yu. Gavrilov, which is more reminiscent of a water park or an entertainment center.
All winning projects will be included in a special catalog and certified for implementation throughout the country.
