The international competition for this project was won by a team from AECOM, Wilkinson Air, DG Architecture, Spanish Pujol Barcelona Architects, event organizer IMG Sports and London-based engineering firm Expedition.
The jury liked their proposal with well-thought-out logistics (separate access routes for athletes and spectators, transport and parking systems), realistic plans for the construction and management of the complex. Since no less attention was paid in the task of the competition to the problem of "heritage", that is, the use of the sports complex after the end of the 2016 Olympics, the architects thought out a program for preserving the ecosystem of the park, in particular, the coastal zone: it will be located on a triangular section protruding into the Guanabara Bay. area of 118 hectares.
Now it houses the Maria Lenk water sports center, the Rio Arena and the velodrome. In 2016, they will add a temporary ice hockey stadium, tennis courts and a sponsor villa, as well as permanent laboratories, a running track, arena, media center and hotel, residential and commercial development. In addition, the preservation of vast green areas is envisaged. Competitions for projects of individual structures will be held in the coming months.
Recall that both AECOM and Wilkinson Air participated in the preparation of the London 2012 Games. In particular, the Wilkinson Air bureau has developed a basketball stadium project for the "native" Olympics.
