The architects won a three-stage competition for the development of the Quartier M district, which will be located between Central Station and the Tanzhause NRW / Capitol contemporary dance school. Until recently, this 3.5 hectare area was occupied by the Deutsche Post sorting center.
The new complex will be built on the site of the old post office building on Erkrater Strasse. The high-rise part of it will house offices and a hotel. The rest of the area will be occupied by municipal housing, and not only the city authorities, but also private investors will finance its construction. It is also planned to arrange a children's leisure center here.
The areas of responsibility are clearly delineated between the two winners. Jürgen Mayer's Bureau is responsible for the high-rise commercial block with offices and a hotel. The architects conceived it as a giant sculptural form literally growing out of the surrounding low-rise buildings to shape the rhythm and structure of the new quarter.
Delugan Meissl is responsible for the residential buildings, including the tower, which will also house commercial space.
The winners have started preparatory work and the development of project documentation, the construction itself is scheduled to begin in mid-2014.
