The pavilion will be erected this fall next to the Tate Liverpool Gallery in the UNESCO-listed dockside area. Even the gallery itself is located in a former dock, remodeled by James Sterling.
Inside will be shown a series of video interviews that make up Aitkin's installation The Source. He asked prominent representatives of the creative intelligentsia, including architects Liz Diller (Diller Scofidio + Renfro), Jacques Herzog, Paolo Soleri and David Adjaye himself, two questions: where does the idea of the work begin and how is it realized? The search for a universal source of creativity for all types of art, a kind of "muse", was the task of the artist.
The round, black volume of the Adjaye Pavilion will consist of a timber frame filled with corrugated acryloplastic panels and bituminous cardboard. Its diameter will be 14.2 m, the height will rise from the edge to the center from 2.8 to 4.8 m due to the roof slope. At night, Aitkin's videos will be projected onto its facade.
The Source is the first work of the Sky Arts Ignition program. Within its framework, in the course of cooperation with various cultural institutions, the Sky Arts TV company initiates the creation in Great Britain and Ireland of 6 works of contemporary art with a budget of 200 thousand pounds each.
Doug Aitkin's installation and David Adjaye's Pavilion will be on display in Liverpool from September 15, 2012 to January 13, 2013.
