The outstanding architect Antoine Predok was awarded in the Life Contribution nomination. His work is distinguished by a close connection with nature: the forms of his buildings echo the surrounding landscape. This award came to Ancestor following another prestigious award: in 2006 he received the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects.
In the architecture department, awards were given to the architects of the Boston studio Office dA Nadir Tehrani and Monica Ponce de Leon. Their work is distinguished by an interest in the innovative use of materials and construction technologies. The scope of their projects ranges from urban planning to furniture design. The problems of the city and its transformation are also among those investigated by these architects.
The landscape design award went to Peter Walker and his PWP workshop. Among their projects are gardens of private houses and city parks, general layouts of districts and landscaping of courtyards of office buildings.
In the category "design mind", which can be translated as "design thinking", were awarded architects and theorists of architecture Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.
Also among the laureates are Adobe and Apple's lead designer Jonathan Ive.
For the first time, the National Design Award was awarded in 2000, as part of the White House program to celebrate the coming of the third millennium. Its function is to promote high quality and innovative trends in all areas of design.
The awards ceremony will take place this fall at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum.
