Sustainability
Sustainability - this concept has become more for the construction industry than for all other areas of society, a guide to action. It provides a framework for all the other leading BAU topics. BAU 2013 will show you where the discussions on this complex topic will lead.
The theme "Sustainable Building" is closely related to the BAU exhibition, as are the organizations whose activities are related to this topic and develop it: Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS), German Society for Sustainable Building (DGNB), Fraunhofer Allianz BAU and ift Rosenheim are all close partners of BAU, who have covered various aspects of sustainable design and construction at BAU 2011 congresses, special shows and forums, and will do so even more actively at BAU 2013.
Much has been done on the topic “Sustainable Building” over the past years. It was unanimously agreed that this concept covers the entire life cycle of a building (from design through operation to demolition) and, along with environmental aspects, also includes economic and sociocultural aspects. Appropriate assessment systems have been developed around the world for the certification of sustainable construction. Not only entire buildings, but also the individual building elements of which they are composed, are tested for environmental sustainability. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in the future will have to contain information on the functional and environmental quality of building elements and materials.
Where does the path lie? One thing is clear: the topic of building sustainability will continue to shape the direction of research and development in the construction industry. The right of the population to participate in decision-making on major construction projects (for example, Stuttgart 21 - the project to rebuild the main dead end station) can be another aspect. Global trends such as demographic change, climate change, energy revolution (energy reform) and urbanization will be discussed in terms of sustainability. It will be about planning and implementing not only individual buildings, but entire neighborhoods and cities in accordance with the norms of sustainable construction. Energy 2.0
The concept, borrowed from the Internet (Web 2.0), refers, as BAU understands it, to the whole future of electricity supply for buildings and to keep pace with this technological innovation, which can be seen at BAU 2013.
Energy 2.0 primarily addresses the rapidly growing importance of renewable energy sources (Energy Revolution), as well as the joint use of various energy sources, fossil and renewable. Of course, Energy 2.0 includes the topics of energy saving and energy efficiency.
Along with these technological components, the concept of "Energy 2.0", like Web 2.0, also has a social dimension. I mean the interaction of everyone who is related to the topic "Energy 2.0", who develops, lobbies and tries to take into account the interests of all: industry, politics, commodities, real estate, and don't forget the people who operate the buildings, among whom there are more and more activists optimizing the energy supply to their homes for reasons of cost savings or out of concern for the environment. What should be the power supply in new buildings? What share of this will be renewable energy sources and how will they be integrated into the building or into the building envelope and how will they be connected to the building systems? What new solutions are there for the energy rehabilitation of buildings? BAU 2013 will provide answers to these questions.
The exhibition will also discuss social and public issues that are directly related to the topic "Energy 2.0". What will the city of the future look like? Will it transform from a consumer into an energy producer and, if so, what does it mean? How are the topics energy and energy efficiency reflected? on our built environment? What roles do certification systems and environmental declarations for building products and materials play now and in the future? These questions will be discussed at forums, shows and BAU 2013 congresses. Renowned experts from all over the world will give their views on these issues. BAU is an ideal platform for this, as it brings together everyone involved in the design, construction and operation of buildings, and it depends on them how the topic of Energy 2.0 will develop further.
Urban development in the 21st century
Today every second person lives in the city. In 2050, already 75 percent, i.e. 9.3 billion people worldwide will live in cities. How to assess these changes, and what they mean for the future of cities, will be considered by BAU 2013 under the theme “Urban Development in the 21st Century”.
In Germany, the future has already begun. Here already three quarters of the population live in urbanized structures. In terms of energy, the population density typical of cities has advantages. As you know, 40 percent of energy is consumed indoors. 75% of them fall on space heating, the rest is spent on lighting, air conditioning and energy consumed by modern means of communication. Another 10 percent of the energy consumed in Germany goes towards mobility, primarily the mobility needed to move between residence and work, to shop and participate in social and cultural life. In developed countries, for example, in almost all of Europe, these indicators are approximately the same.
It is logical that an “integrated” city, in which houses are intelligently energy-optimized, has great potential for energy savings. This is not about every single building. Energy refurbishment should not destroy the local flavor or monuments. It is about preserving structures and creating a neutral carbon dioxide levels of housing by networking with energy-producing buildings and thus creating a carbon-optimized city.
The following fact also speaks for life in the city: only in urban structures will it be possible to provide elderly people with a long life in their personal environment. And the life of the elderly is not only about health and medical care. This also includes social and cultural participation. This can only provide life in the city, because many social and other services, the necessary infrastructure, for example, public transport, are available only in the urban environment.
Both energy and demography require future strategies. This is the main task for today and tomorrow for strong partners from among designers, politicians, industrial manufacturers and executors.
Building for all generations
To grow old within its four walls is the dream of many people. More and more buildings are being designed in such a way that it becomes possible. BAU 2013 will show you how “building for all generations” looks in detail and what needs to be considered.
As early as 2011 BAU raised this topic and implemented it together with GGT, the German Society for Gerontics, in one of the special screenings. This time, a special show "Building for all generations" will pay special attention to comfort. The venue in Pavilion A4 will recreate multifunctional hotel rooms equipped with products that meet the needs of young and old alike.
In addition to this, relevant visits to the BAU exhibition will be held. The survey will be structured around the question of how to design and equip the building in such a way that every generation will feel good about it and can use it, regardless of age and physical characteristics.
Due to the fact that people are living longer and longer and want to be independent as long as possible, construction for all generations will not soon lose its relevance. A survey of 1,100 people aged 50 and over, conducted by the TNS Emnid research institute and presented at BAU 2011, showed that two-thirds of those surveyed at the age of 70 want to live unaided within their four walls. Half of the respondents want to rebuild their apartment or house in accordance with age requirements in order to be able to continue to live in them. This topic has long occupied both architects and designers. Research agency Heinze asked 206 architects and designers which topics will dominate the construction industry over the next five years. 63% of them answered: “Barrier-free construction.” For BAU 2013, this is a sufficient reason to put generational equality in construction at the top of the list.

BAU 2013, the world's leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems, will take place from 14 to 19 January 2013 at the Neue Messe München exhibition grounds.
