The sun is one of the few sources on earth that provides heat for free, allowing you to save on energy consumption. But how to keep it inside the house in winter and not let it into the room in summer? In search of an answer, scientists around the world are investigating the effectiveness of various sun shading systems. Special attention was paid to the window shutters, which tame the sun, allowing to ensure the optimal temperature regime.

Emphasis on windows

But why is it necessary to protect windows? “In the light of modern architectural trends, a house is not walls with windows, but windows with walls,” says Stanislav Kuzmitsky, Deputy Marketing Director of the ALUTECH Group of Companies, the largest manufacturer of roller shutter systems in the European space. - As you know, the maximum heat loss - more than 25% - occurs precisely through the windows, while the walls "give" only 18%. For this reason, if we want to make a house energy efficient, the utmost attention must be paid to protecting the windows."

Scientifically proven protection

In Western Europe, where the topic of energy saving comes to the fore, the heat-shielding properties of roller shutter systems have been studied for a long time. Thus, tests carried out by the French Construction Association in conjunction with the trade union of manufacturers of protective structures (SNFPSA), have proved that thanks to the use of roller shutter systems, the thermal insulation of a window in the middle zone of the Eurozone can increase by up to 55%.

Manufacturers are also studying the effectiveness of using protective structures to save energy resources. Thus, ALUTECH Group of Companies carried out a complex of roller shutters tests at the international Rosenheim Institute (Germany) according to the methodology of the main European standards. The test results showed that when installing roller shutters, heat loss through a 4/16/4 mm single-chamber double-glazed window is reduced by 30% or more. This, in turn, fully confirms the compliance of ALUTECH roller shutters with the requirements of the new GOST R 52502-2012 in terms of thermal conductivity. According to the technical requirements of this document, roller shutters must provide additional resistance to heat transfer of the window by at least 20%.

How it works

“Thermal insulation is provided due to the location of the protective structure: a so-called air cushion is created between the glass and the roller shutter. Air has excellent thermal insulation properties, which is especially important for the winter season, when the "air blanket" on the windows prevents the penetration of cold. This makes roller shutters different from other systems, including blinds and traditional grilles. - Notes Stanislav Kuzmitsky. “Additional comfort in the form of sound insulation is provided by the aluminum roller shutter profile: thanks to a safe, environmentally friendly filler, it guarantees a 5-10 dBA reduction in external noise.”

Profitable light

Now about the hot … About the summer! According to German scientists, on a sunny summer day, about 160 kWh of heat penetrates into the house through the windows. This is enough to heat a 7000-liter pool from +10 to + 30 ° C. Studies by the French organization SNFPSA have shown that, thanks to roller shutters, the window's ability to transmit solar heat is reduced by up to 70%. At the same time, the indoor temperature decreases by 5 ° C or more, regardless of the type of glazing or geographical area.

In the heat of summer, furniture and floors, heated by the direct rays of the sun, maintain a high temperature in the house even in the evening. To get rid of unnecessary heat sources, you just need to lower the roller shutters to a certain level.

As part of a comprehensive study of the thermophysical properties of roller shutters, ALUTECH Group of Companies carried out thermal imaging control, which is one of the most effective and visual test methods.

Its essence lies in filming a residential building using a thermal imager - a special device that allows you to observe the distribution of surface temperature, which is displayed as a color field, where warmer shades - yellow and red - correspond to a higher temperature.

Thermal images of window openings with roller shutters in the open (Fig. 1) and closed (Fig. 2) positions clearly demonstrate the difference between heat losses in both cases.

Outside air temperature averaged –12 ° С. The results of thermal imaging control showed: when the roller shutter is lowered, the temperature inside the room rises, and on the outer surface of the window it decreases by 4.3 ° C, which once again proves the effectiveness of the structures.
