The competition for the concept of the facades of the new building of the Tretyakov Gallery, held recently, caused a lot of controversy, both from the point of view of the correctness of "drawing" the facades to the finished project in general, and from an aesthetic point of view. It seems that all projects were criticized, both the old and the new got. Grigory Revzin made a proposal to hold the competition again. Andrey Bokov made statements that the project that won the competition was similar to the options proposed by his team earlier. However, the readers' awareness of the history of this project is far from complete - probably, in part, this hinders the evaluation of both the projects themselves and the judgments.
We are publishing a selection of materials on the history of the design of the State Tretyakov Gallery, courtesy of Mosproekt-4, which, as you can see below, begins in 1996, becomes more active in the spring of 2013, and continues, as we know, to this day (now Mosproekt-4 »And SPEECH are working on a joint version of the project, which was recommended by the Arch Council when announcing the results of the competition). Here you can be convinced that among the options proposed by "Mosproekt-4" in the spring of this year there really are very similar to those that were proposed during the "facade" competition.

“GUP MNIIP“Mosproekt-4”has been working on the project of the museum complex of the State Tretyakov Gallery since 1990. The design assignment changed three times along with the changing needs of the gallery and the development of the idea of popularizing museum activities. New planning solutions were developed three times.
1996–2001
The architectural-planning and volumetric-spatial solutions of the complex were approved by the Public Council under the Mayor of Moscow on April 13, 2001. It was proposed to consider the possibility of overlapping the courtyard space with the arrangement of the atrium.
2003
April 2008
The project was completed, having received a positive opinion from the Mosgosexpertiza and the Scientific and Technical Council of the Moskomarkhitektura, and on April 22, 2008, it was approved by order of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography. The facades of the museum complex were developed with the participation of students of the Institute. I. E. Repin.
2009 - working documentation for the “wall in the ground” and strengthening of the foundations of buildings falling into the zone of influence of construction was developed.
2012–2013 - adjustment of the approved project documentation in accordance with the new terms of reference.
March 2013 - four options for the facades of the projected museum complex are presented.

May 2013 - a clause was held at the Moscow Architectural Institute among students and teachers. According to the results of the clause, 90 works were presented, of which 12 were selected for the competition.
