At the end of February, the results of the II International Competition "Terraces in Landscape Design", organized by the Association of Producers "DPK" and the companies "Twinson-Logistic" and "Terradek", were summed up.

The main goal of the competition was to find the most interesting and innovative ideas in the creation of terraces using wood-polymer composite or solid wood. In addition, the competition was aimed at actively assisting architects and landscape designers in promoting their projects using innovative technologies and the most modern materials in the field of construction and design.

Participants of the competition could submit projects of terraces or realized objects using a terrace board. Out of a hundred applications received for the competition from various parts of our country, as well as from Ukraine and Belarus, the jury selected 19 finalist works. And already at the second stage of voting, the winners were selected from among the finalists.

The first place and the main prize of the competition - a trip for two to the cities of Italy - was awarded to the project of wooden platforms in the cottage settlement "Esquire Park", made by Natalia Vishnitskaya, Maria Ukhina and Natalia Amirova. The second prize - filming in the "Fazenda" program - went to Maxim Tolmachev for his project of transforming the urban space on the Spit of Bolotny Island. The third prize of the competition, "Audience Choice Award", went to Andrei Korovyansky, who presented a restoration project with adaptation to the modern use of Ostankino Park. For his work, the author was awarded a professional Wacom pen tablet.

Below we publish the projects of the winners of the competition.

First place and the main prize of the competition. The project of wooden platforms for the coastal zone in the cottage settlement "Esquire Park" in the Moscow region

The project was developed for the Esquire Park cottage community, located near a picturesque reservoir with a strongly pronounced, complex coastal relief and rich vegetation. The task of the designers was to provide the residents of the village with convenient and safe access to water. As conceived by the architects, the path to the river runs directly from residential buildings to the very edge of the water, bypassing existing trees. Because of this, the trajectory of the path itself acquired a zigzag shape of a broken line, and the height difference caused a stepped descent from one site to another. At the same time, the customer did not intend to carry out excavation work on this site - they had to focus exclusively on the natural relief.

The task was complicated not only by the peculiarities of the site, but also by the extremely limited budget. However, the designers managed to find the most optimal solution by offering a series of wooden structures, stairs and platforms with playgrounds arranged on them for games and summer recreation in the company of friends.

In order to make the most rational use of the funds allocated for the construction, the authors proposed to implement the project in stages. The first stage of construction involves the creation of a main route to the water along an optimally gentle relief. At the second stage, playgrounds for children with playgrounds and sandpits, wooden decks with gazebos and benches for rest overlooking the river are successively strung onto the created axis of the route. And at the final stage, bonfires for preparing barbecue are organized and territories for outdoor celebrations and picnics are formed.

While the project is at the stage of development, implementation is scheduled for the coming summer of 2014.

The second prize of the competition is filming in the Fazenda program. Urban Space Transformation Project on the Spit of Bolotny Island

Designer - AltSpace studio

Architect - Maxim Tolmachev, art director - Igor Voloshchuk

The project of transforming the urban space on the Spit of Bolotny Island was a personal initiative of AltSpace studio. The authors tried to present their own vision of urbanized Moscow with an eye to the development of its water resources. Instead of concrete slabs, they turned to wooden embankments, terraces and marinas typical of small seaside towns. According to the project, the island's arrow turned into a kind of deck of a giant ship. It is no coincidence that this "Marina" is located near the building of the "Red October" factory, because it was here in 1867 that the Imperial River Yacht Club was opened. According to the author's idea, the place is regaining its lost function, albeit in a slightly metaphorical sense: wood-paved terraces and “yachts” moored to the shore form an attractive public space accessible to all citizens.

Ostankino Park is located along the 1st Ostankinskaya Street and is a monument of history and culture of landscape gardening art. The reconstruction project submitted for the competition covers one of the peninsulas of the Garden Pond, created in the 18th century. This peninsula bears the name of Alexander I and is famous for its majestic oak trees. As part of the restoration work, it was decided to create a recreation area there. However, due to the fact that oaks have a very dense root system, it turned out to be almost impossible to implement this idea by conventional means, since any intervention can destroy the trees. In this regard, the idea arose to use Terradeck materials in such a way that the base of the site stood on a pile foundation and a steel frame, and on top there was a platform with custom-made decorative chairs and openwork Maffam swing chairs suspended from oak branches.

Three pump-fountains with a jet height of 7-10 m are installed in the pond, which allows maintaining a favorable hydrological regime, and also creates an attractive perspective view.

At the moment, work on the restoration of the park is still ongoing, but this site is already very popular with visitors of all ages without exception.
