The architectural competition for the concept of a volumetric-spatial solution for the reconstruction of the Luzhniki pool was announced in December 2013. Of the 43 applications submitted to the jury chaired by Vladimir Plotkin, only six made it to the second round. As we have already reported, the first place in the competition was taken by the UNK project. By the way, the winner of the competition became known at the end of April, but neither the project that won first place, nor the works of the finalists were published. Now we bring to your attention a selection of five favorites of the competition. We will also remind you of the winner - this is a project of the UNK project group, you can view it in more detail here.

PI "Arena" + Lanik
The project took second place in the jury rating,
voiced on April 29th.
The parallelepiped of the main building of the pool, "grown" within the boundaries specified in the technical specifications of the competition, is a strict geometric volume, somewhat softened by plastic deformations of the facade. Translucent wavy lamellas are designed to lighten the appearance of the building and give, according to the architects, "fluidity, indicating its connection with the water element."
The surfaces of the glass volume, concave inward, reveal the preserved facades of the pool. Despite this, the new part of the building plays a primary role in the renovated pool building, relegating the historical facades to the background.
A-B studio
The project took third place
in the jury ranking of April 29.
The architects propose to enlarge the existing pool building by adding a distance equal to two spans between the columns of the north or south facade. The north-western façade with its bas-reliefs has been moved 12 meters and restored, preserving all the historical bas-reliefs. The solution also involves the restoration of the open bowl of the vaulting bath, the vaulting tower, the stands around the bowl and the colonnade.
All the main rooms will be located in a simple rectangular volume of white glass of varying degrees of transparency. As conceived by the authors, this volume is an independent art object, a translucent sculpture, onto the plane of which light graphics can be projected: light music, super graphics, slides, films, advertising, shows. Thus, the entire building of the new aquatic center is one giant media facade.
Asadov Architectural Bureau
The reconstruction of the complex "Asadov's Architectural Bureau" was treated very correctly, preserving the historical part of the building as much as possible and supplementing it with a simple and laconic new form. To the classical architecture of the pool, a rectangular “pencil case” was added, which the architects propose to sheathe with special panels and plant with mosses and lichens that can eventually cover the facade with a solid green carpet. "Pencil case" forms a spectacular cantilever stem from the side of the Great Sports Arena and covers the summer terrace.
On the roof of the new volume, a green eco-spa zone is conceived - a "lost world" in the center of Moscow. The inner space of the complex continues this theme and is a full-fledged aqua zone, with moisture-loving vegetation and all kinds of water activities.
DNA Architectural Group
The DNA proposal retains the authentic northwest façade with bas-reliefs, as well as the north and south façades with colonnades. All other building structures are dismantled. In the resulting perimeter of the walls, the architects place a new curvilinear volume resembling an elongated bowl. The outer walls of the "bowl" are a load-bearing lattice steel shell structure.
Inside the new volume, two large multi-luminous spaces with skylights combine different functional areas: swimming pools, water park, wellness, fitness, gyms and a restaurant. The project provides for the option of installing a sliding roof over the water park.

Arch group
The main task of this project was the harmonious combination of new and old architecture, respect for the historical facades and the creation of a vivid image of a modern pool. The volumetric solution proposed by the Arch Group bureau consists of three main components: existing facades, a new glass volume and a curved roof shell.
The roof with dynamic lighting is the most expressive element of the building, which is quite justified, since the most spectacular view of the pool opens from the metro bridge and the automobile overpass. The five-story glass volume, hiding all the main areas of the building, plays a background role and serves as a link between the old architecture and the modern coating.
