The fact that partitions, suspended ceilings or niches in a room can be made from drywall has been known for a long time. Moreover, now it is even difficult to imagine repairs without this convenient and environmentally friendly material. But its benefits are not limited to partitions or niches alone. Drywall is a phenomenally plastic material in the literal and figurative sense that can turn housing into a stylish and designer space, it would be a fantasy. Any architectural style from antique to high-tech, all kinds of complex structures, be it columns, hemispherical or coffered ceilings, domes - all this can be done from a sheet of drywall.

Columns are one of the most striking elements of the interior. Cylindrical or rectangular, they are able to create a unique style in the house and help to properly zone the room. If the columns do not have a supporting function, then it is best to make them from drywall, this saves time and money. The main thing in the construction of the column is the metal frame; the diameter of the structure itself depends on its configuration. And already pre-bent drywall is directly attached to the frame.

Depending on the radius of curvature, dry or wet methods of bending sheets of gypsum board are used. For columns with small diameters, up to 1300 mm, the dry method and arched Knauf sheet with a thickness of 6.5 mm to 9.5 mm, or 12.5 mm are best suited. In the case of the latter, U-shaped grooves must be made across the sheet with a small step. These grooves will help to give the column the correct shape as it is attached to the frame.

If the column is of a larger diameter, from 1800 mm, then the wet bending method and drywall with a thickness of 12.5 mm are better suited here. The sheet is pre-perforated (a layer of cardboard is pierced), then moistened with water, bent and fixed on the frame until completely dry. How to do this, you can see

Most often, drywall is used when decorating ceilings. Here, designers do not like to restrain their fantasies and create truly unique ceiling structures: curved, wavy, stepped, beamed, coffered. The latter are gaining more and more popularity, thanks to the fashion for the English style and the Gothic, despite the fact that the construction of the caissons requires painstaking and meticulous work. But the work is worth it, as the coffered ceilings give the interior an aristocratic and noble look. In fact, caissons are niches, respectively, the construction of such a ceiling is a mix of the construction of numerous niches and a suspended ceiling. From the materials you need Knauf sheets 12.5 mm thick, ceiling profiles and hangers. Well, and the most important thing for a coffered ceiling - the height from the floor must be at least 3 m, otherwise the ceiling will "crush".

Modern technologies for the production of plasterboard and related materials allow you to create more complex structures such as vaulted or domed ceilings. The easiest way is to make a frame for such a ceiling to order according to your drawings from the company. But you can try to create the dome structure yourself. The main thing is to carefully calculate the frame and correctly draw the drawing. The frame must be installed in such a way that the center is not offset, and the metal profiles are located symmetrically to each other. For vaulted structures, it is recommended to use 6.5 mm thick arched plasterboard.

Of course, drywall is not only suitable for creating decorative elements, it is ideal for the construction of functional structures. Despite its seeming thinness, this is a durable material, and with a special construction technology - even super-strong, capable of withstanding a significant load. This becomes possible under the condition of double or triple wall cladding with sheets of drywall and when they are installed apart, that is, without coincidence at the seams, with a profile step of 50 cm. Such walls will perfectly withstand a hammock or horizontal bar. And if you attach a metal bracket to the wall and hang a shelf from the same gypsum board in 2 layers on it, then it is able to withstand the weight of three adults without damaging the wall itself.
