The Wilkinson Air arena will be the third largest structure in the entire Olympic Park (after the main stadium and water sports center) and one of the largest temporary structures in the history of the Olympic movement.
The stadium, which has a capacity of 12,000 spectators during the Olympics and 10,000 during the Paralympic Games, will then be dismantled and 2/3 of its parts will be recycled or reused. This will not only reduce the cost of its construction, but also make the building environmentally neutral.
The stadium will be used for all basketball matches and for the final and semi-finals of the handball competition.
The ephemeral and modest appearance of the future basketball arena differs significantly from another recently unveiled Wilkinson Air building - a winter sports complex with a ski jump in Nizhny Novgorod, which is to become a training base for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.
