Bologna Holocaust Memorial

Illustration: concorsi.archibo.it
Illustration: concorsi.archibo.it

Illustration: concorsi.archibo.it On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the Jewish Community of Bologna and the Union of Jewish Communities of Italy are holding a competition for a Holocaust Memorial project.

As a result of the policy carried out in Nazi Germany, called the Holocaust (or "Catastrophe", Shoah), about 6 million Jews died, as well as 3,300,000 Soviet prisoners of war, 1 million political prisoners, 500,000 Roma, about 9,000 homosexuals and 2,250 Jehovah's Witnesses. There were also about 270,000 cases of violent deaths among disabled and mentally ill people.

This tragic page in European and world history should help build a future free from violence and racism. The new memorial should fully convey this idea and pay tribute to the memory of the victims of Nazism. The complexity of the task lies in the fact that the site proposed by the organizers is a transit zone in a busy part of the city, and therefore it is necessary to plan it in such a way that a passer-by would have a desire to stop there for at least a minute to reflect.

dead-line: 07.04.2015
open to: groups with the obligatory participation of an architect / engineer and an artist
reg. contribution: not
awards: the € 15,000 budget will be split between the three first round finalists who will continue to work on the project; the winner's project may be implemented

Lost spaces

Illustration: www.dtalks.org
Illustration: www.dtalks.org

Illustration: www.dtalks.org The aim of the competition is to take a fresh look at the “remnants” of the urban fabric - spaces that have no function and emerged as a necessary adjoining territory in the design of various structures. We are talking about the area between two houses or around bus stops, the space between highways or the green area at a roundabout.

Competitors are encouraged to develop the social function of these territories, and they can design on the sites proposed by the organizers, or they can choose their own "lost spaces" in Calgary. In addition, the jury will assess the architectural component of the project, its social, economic and environmental feasibility, the relationship of the proposed solution with the context and the possibility of implementing the project, including in the given climatic conditions.

"Passages": transit spaces of the XXI century

Tours Cathedral © veigo. Source: www.panoramio.com

Tours Cathedral © veigo. Source: www.panoramio.com The A10 - the highway that connects Paris and Bordeaux - runs through the heart of Tours, not far from its main architectural landmark - the Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Gatien. Also, the A10 is a link between the center of Tours and its suburb - Saint-Pierre-de-Cor.

Avenue Georges Pompidou, which includes a pedestrian zone and an area for cyclists, runs in the city center next to the highway. However, firstly, its pedestrian part is narrow, and, secondly, 6 car lanes of the A10 highway and 2 lanes of Avenue Georges Pompidou do not make walking a pleasant walk and do not allow you to enjoy beautiful views of the city and the Loire River. Contestants are invited to develop a project of “passages” 1 km long, which can pass above or below the highway. The aim is not to replace or modify the A10, but to complement it with a pedestrian and cyclist area with recreational, shopping and other functions.

Public spaces for children

Illustration: www.facebook.com/childfriendlypublicspace

Illustration: www.facebook.com/childfriendlypublicspace Ivano-Frankivsk is a city in western Ukraine, founded in the 17th century as a fortress to protect against the raids of the Crimean Tatars and Zaporozhye Cossacks.

Today the city center is built up with residential, administrative, commercial, public buildings. In addition, public spaces form the fabric of the city. Some of them are used for city celebrations, others serve as a transit zone for pedestrians, while others spontaneously fill with unauthorized trade activity, inappropriate advertising and unsafe entertainment for children (trampolines, bike and electric car rental points).

The organizers of the competition propose to radically change the situation and create at the same time functional, safe and modern spaces for children and families with children. In addition, one of the important aspects is the successful integration of sites into the urban environment.

120 HOURS 2015 - architecture competition for students

The competition, which has been running since 2010, is organized by Norwegian architecture students without the participation of the administration of their universities.

Its unique feature is that the task remains a secret for the participants until the end of registration: only after that, its text is sent to them, and only 120 hours are given to develop the competition project, that is, five days.

This year, for the first time, the topic of the competition is known in advance: experimental heritage conservation … Preservation of heritage is still defined by the Venice Charter (1964), but how relevant are its provisions today? Shouldn't we support a new, experimental approach to this problem?

When history meets modernity

Illustration: build.rbs.lv/#competition
Illustration: build.rbs.lv/#competition

Illustration: build.rbs.lv/#competition In Riga, in 1912, according to the project of the architect E. von Irmer, a tenement house was built in the Art Nouveau style popular at that time. In 1920-1930, the building was used as a gymnasium, a newspaper publishing house, and a clinic. Later, it housed an art school and a music school, and since the 1990s, the house was given over to the Riga Technical University and Riga Business School.

Today the number of students at the business school is growing, so there is a need to build a new academic building. This is what the participants of the idea competition will have to do. The organizers expect to see bold modern solutions, which, nevertheless, go well with an architectural monument of the Art Nouveau era and do not encroach on its safety.

Monsanto Natural Observatory

Illustration: www.arqfolium.com
Illustration: www.arqfolium.com

Illustration: www.arqfolium.com Parque Florestal de Monsanto is located near the Belém quarter of Lisbon and covers almost 10% of the city's territory. Several theme parks are located here, providing guests and residents of the capital of Portugal with an opportunity for outdoor activities.

Florestal di Monsanto also has several panoramic views from where you can admire fantastic views of the dense forests, the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean. But, perhaps, the best view of Lisbon opens from the territory of the panoramic restaurant Monsanto, which was proposed to the bidders as a design site. The restaurant was once considered the most luxurious establishment in the city, but now its building is abandoned and sometimes even serves for storing building materials.

The objectives of the competition include the creation of a Natural Observatory on this site. The use of an abandoned restaurant directly for the observatory is optional, but the organizers ask that the Monsanto building play a significant role in the works of the participants. The new observation complex should become a place for the dissemination of knowledge about the diversity of the natural environment of the park, an obligatory point of tourist routes and one of the symbols of the city. Of course, the contestants need to keep in mind the architectural and environmental aspects of the project.

New look of petrol stations

Illustration: combocompetitions.com
Illustration: combocompetitions.com

Illustration: combocompetitions.com Just as cars became a part of human life, gas stations have flooded the space around us. However, many modern gas stations are unattractive, boring and have a negative impact on the environment. Since today it is impossible to do without gas stations, it is necessary to revise their concept, find options for combining functionality and aesthetics.

Participants need to prepare design projects for two filling stations. One of them should be located on a section of a country road in Colombia (a common task for everyone), the other - anywhere in the world, at the discretion of the contestants. As conceived by the organizers, the design should be universal and applicable in different countries and regions. It is also necessary to provide for the possibility of modification, taking into account climatic, economic and other factors.

Photo: blog.giallozafferano.it Banzai Media is one of the largest online publishers in Italy, which, among other things, promotes Sonia Peronacci's culinary blog - GialloZafferano. This site (also available as an app for a tablet or smartphone) with recipes from Italian and world cuisine is incredibly popular with around 800,000 daily visitors.

The organizers invite contestants to expand on the topic of the relationship between culinary art, design and the Internet. It is required to develop any services or special devices that will help people create their culinary masterpieces and improve their cooking skills. First, you should think over a concept that implies the further development of a series of services, and only after that you should be engaged in the design of the object, it is necessary to implement this idea. The new device must be able to connect to the Internet and match the design of the GialloZafferano website.
